It didn’t start just now. It was already at the stage of Turkey calling Russian Ambassador to answer about the frequent airspace violations in the beginning of October - http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/06/nato-chief-jens-stoltenberg-russia-turkish-airspace-violations-syria

Sees them as an asset for some reason.

Russia was requesting to exercise its rights under international law to overfly the border to verify troop movements against its ally Syria

” Open Skies” treaty
Turkey of course not cooperatung given the plethora of terrorist camps and weapon supplies moving into SYRIA

The U.S. has claimed right to overfly Russian and Belarus territory to monitor movement near UKraine in exercise of this treaty - check out Open Skies treaty

A violation of airspace that lasts 17 seconds is hardly worth mentioning, much less call for destroying an aircraft and killing aircrew.

It seems that a NATO member has used its advanced weaponry for ill-considered barbarity and is dragging the rest of us with them.
