Obama calls Turkish president to discuss downing of Russian warplane

President Obama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed on the need to reduce tensions after Turkish jets shot down a Russian warplane flying near the country's border with Syria, the White House said Tuesday.

Obama voiced support "for Turkey's right to defend its sovereignty" during a phone call with Erdogan, according to a White House statement.

"The leaders agreed on the importance of de-escalating the situation and pursuing arrangements to ensure that such incidents do not happen again," the White House added.

U.S. and NATO officials said Tuesday the Russian jet entered Turkish airspace, according to the Associated Press.

The incident angered Russia, which claimed the plane did not cross the border from Syria into Turkey.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the downing of the plane a "stab in the back" and accused Turkey of abetting terrorism.

Russia and Turkey, a NATO ally of the U.S., are already at odds over the fate of Syrian President Bashar Assad, a Kremlin ally.

Moscow began a military intervention in Syria in September to shore up Assad, who is battling rebels backed by Ankara and Washington.

The incident also cast a shadow over Tuesday's meeting between Obama and French President François Hollande, who is hoping for closer collaboration between U.S. and Russia over fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in response to the Paris terror attacks.

Obama met with with his National Security Council on Tuesday to discuss ways to accelerate the fight against ISIS.

The White House said Obama's advisers told him "there is currently no specific, credible threat to the homeland from ISIS."

Why are we fighting to overthrow the government of Syria?

I know Assad is no Choir Boy, but if we’re going to kill nasty old dictators, why not the one 90 miles away from Florida?

Barry is hoping to “reduce tensions” with a few Turkmen by fishing for a down-low invitation to a Turkish prison.

Ergogan would love to have NATO beat off Russia and overthrow Assad.

...which is to say: implement the ISIS caliphate.

What does Turkey care if Moscow and DC nuke each other?!

Apparently the Russkies were only in several seconds. They are known to be stinkers when it comes to skirting airspace that’s a given. But wan’t this heavy handed?

“What does Turkey care if [there’s a nuclear war]?”

All sane leaders would care a lot, Turkey more than say Paraguay or Mozambique. A nuclear war would probably involve strikes on military targets in the Black Sea region as well as possibly western Europe. Either way, massive clouds of radiation would be headed towards Turkey even if they were left out of said exchanges, which as a NATO member is not a guarantee.

Also one can imagine the state of the global economy a day or two into a nuclear war.

So in the abstract, nobody should ever discount the impact of a nuclear exchange. A large-scale one might render much of the northern hemisphere almost unlivable even before we get into such consequences as nuclear winter. Only some parts of the southern hemisphere and tropics might get through with very much left, and they would have to quickly restructure their economies to trade only with each other.

It crossed my mind that perhaps some enterprising Caliphate builders were trying for that very end.

There is precedent in fiction, anyway; from Japan seeking to have the US and the USSR nuke each other in James Bond's You Only Live Twice, to the terroristic Tom Clancy's The Sum of All Fears who arranges to have the Super Bowl nuked (with what was intended to be an H-bomb, therefore presumably too difficult for terrorists, therefore Russia!)...and after the bomb goes off tries to instigate a tank battle at the East-West German border, hoping things would spiral out of control...

“It might have taken the Russian jet a few seconds to cross that tiny isthmus of Turkey. How could they have warned it for 5 minutes?”

All the reports I’ve read are either poorly worded or are missing key pieces of the factual puzzle. SPECULATION: Turkey has an Aerial Identification Zone (AIDZ) extending into adjacent Syrian airspace to specifically warn aircraft before they cross into Turkish airspace. Last week a Russian SU-30 escorting a strike force locked it’s RADAR on a Turkish F-16. I think the Turks set up what amounted to ambush because they are attempting to assert a defensive bubble over the Turkmen population of northern Syria.

If they’re talking they’re talking in Arabic.

I’m not kidding. Zero doesn’t speak Turkish and Erdogan doesn’t speak English. But they do chat it up every time they meet.
