It’s horrible Sick - the cop needs to go to prison with other common killers. Just because he’s wearing a uniform doesn’t mean he’s not a criminal on the inside.

In this case first degree murder is being used as anti riot insurance, the same as the $5 million payout to the family.
You know the money that comes into Chicago that week. It’s not the rad techs... It’s the radiologists wives shopping on Michigan Ave.
No riot now. Does Illinois allow juries to convict of lesser charges? Attempted murder acquittal got us the Rodney King riots.
Here is the backup. You do your own search (I did) and you will find MANY cities have the policy to empty their gun once they begin firing; and I think it IS a good policy! Type in Google search "officers trained to unload guns".
Maybe charging 1st. Degree Murder is a way of getting a plea bargain or getting the perp to plead to 2nd degree murder.

Like I said I’m not unhappy the thug is dead but from what I see on the tape it’s hard to claim this as a justified shooting.
More likely an attempt to head off civil unrest and political reprecussions. They’ve had it for a year, and they decide to overcharge within a day or two of the dashcam tapes release, I don’t buy it. Though the shooting appears to be problematical in the video, I don’t buy 1st degree murder, and if there aren’t lesser charges filed, they’re asking for an acquittal. Of course none of this know what other evidence there is, but it’s reasonable to assume if it was compelling, charges would have been brought long ago.
While I share part of your feelings, what if he'd stopped after two shots. Suspect acting strangely, refusing to stop, brandishing a knife, didn't react to a taser. Can you shoot him twice in those circumstances? Three or four rounds? Justified? I think so, and since the first two shots were likely fatal, whatever offence the next 14 might constitute, some apparently fired when he was on the ground, it would take a lot to convince me it was murder at all, much less 1st degree. Of course there may be more we don't know
