I think the goal was to put Saddam's WMD (that were spirited off to the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon just prior to the second Iraq war )into the hands of either Sunni jihadis or Iran, I haven't decided which. Either way, he needed Assad out of the way.
I have heard rumor Saddam's WMD included weaponized smallpox from the Central Asian Biopreparat labs obtained just after the collapse of the Soviet Union (which makes sense). If that is so, one need not imagine the danger.
