Arizona Democratic State Senator Carlyle Begay announced Monday he is leaving the Democratic Party and becoming a Republican. Senator Begay is a Navajo Indian and represents an area of Arizona which encompasses the Navajo and Hopi reservations.
Begay told the Arizona Republican, "the Republican Party better reflects the values of self-determination and self-empowerment that he holds and wants to emphasize to his district."
To announce his decision, Begay released a two-minute video entitled "Change Must Happen Now" explaining his reasoning. Citing the failing education system, high dropout rate, crumbling infrastructure and unemployment rates "as high as 80 percent" in parts of his district, Begay told constituents he's found it is the Republican Party who has been willing to work with him to address these issues.....

....."With an open mind and heart," Begay concluded, "I clearly see the Republican Party as a party of progress, the party of opportunity, and moving forward - my party."
Arizona Republican Governor Doug Ducey greeted the news gleefully. .....

I don’t know enough about the Navajos personally to make any broad statement
...just observations ....
They held out the longest against building a casino.......( one was just built last year)
I thought it was a personal integrity on their part to not give in to this.
I was also impressed with the little Navajo Reformed Church we visited ( Monument Valley) and their efforts to help, in many cases, these very helpless people........
I liked reading it both times :)
All too often these days, what starts out as parody ends up as documentary.
Don’t forget the new (coal fired) power plant near Window Rock the EPA wants to shut down.
Bump
Hey if the good ole boys down south can flip when the Democrats start sinking why not this guy?
He’s obviously not a “real native American” like Elizabeth Warren.
Do he Begay?
Right, you’re only a real [fill in the blank] if you’re a socialist.
“he is leaving the Democratic Party and becoming a Republican”
I doubt he’s leaving the party, McCain didn’t.
So another democrat senator from Arizona has decided to
infiltrate the republican party. What is it with Arizona
and it’s fake republican senators? You have Skeletor McCain
and now a Carlyle (probably) Begay.
So Arazonaroids will only vote for a democrat if the candidate
runs as a republican?
Careful your microaggression is showing...
Careful your microaggression is showing...I'm sure I've shown worse now and then. ;)
If he’s pool NG at a dem purge next yer, he might be seeing a chance for him running for the H of R in the AZ 6th district.
He could be the first Navajo in Congress.
If he’s LOOKING at a dem purge...
g-d- auto correct.
Obama’s EPA drowning the Animas River and the Navajo farm lands dependant on it in arsenic sludge might tick some folks off.
It’s been my impression that though the Native American Indians are generally on the bandwagon of more welfare spending on any range of government programs that they are still more socially conservative on most issues, or am I wrong?
Maybe this gentleman is just recognizing that conservative reforms will work for his community, since the welfare state has failed them??
Ben Campbell was a Dem. turned Rep. in CO and served as a US Senator so you might be right!!!
I see apathy more than conservatism amongst most of them in NW NM and NE Arizona.
If my grandfather was still alive, he could tell you better... He was a a teacher, then Superintendent of one of the big Indian Schools decades ago. I haven’t met or had friends of 1/100th as he did.
I see apathy more than conservatism amongst most of them in NW NM and NE Arizona. But I don’t get around in those areas like I used to, so maybe things have changed.
