There is some possibility that Trump would be even more compelling as an Independent. So many people are disgusted with both major parties. If a charismatic, bold leader emerged and disavowed both of the big parties, I think people might see that as a huge plus.
Personally, I think Trump will stay in as a Republican, and choose Cruz as a running mate, and win in a landslide. But I see the Independent option as equally promising.

But I see the Independent option as equally promising. Why? All a third party would accomplish is election of the Democrat -- the Hildebeest.
Third parties are folly.

I could also see Cruz joining him on that Independent ticket. Why not? The GOP in the Senate hates him and doesn’t cooperate with him in the least.

"I think Trump will stay in as a Republican, and choose Cruz as a running mate, and win in a landslide." I still hold out hope that Cruz will get the nomination but if he does and he doesn't ask Trump to be his VP he will have made the Dumbest move in American Campaign history since Dukakis put on that helmet and got in the tank.
Cruz/Trump would also win in a landslide IMHO.
