Donald Trump: Open to Independent Bid if GOP Doesn’t Treat Him ‘Fairly’
wsj.com ^ | Laura Meckler

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Sunday he is open to running for president as an independent if he concludes Republicans are not treating him "fairly."

He made his comments on ABC's "This Week" when asked about a Wall Street Journal story first published online Friday that reported an effort by Republican establishment figures to unite to knock Mr. Trump out of the race. The group plans a "guerrilla campaign" backed by secret donors to "defeat and destroy" the celebrity businessman’s candidacy, the Journal reported.

The notion of an independent Trump bid worries some Republicans, who fear he would siphon votes from the GOP nominee and help elect a Democrat.

Asked if he would reconsider his promise not to run as an independent, Mr. Trump didn't give a direct answer.

"Well, we'll see what happens," he said. "It will be very interesting. But I'm leading every poll by a lot. It's not even a little bit anymore, it's a lot."

Asked again if he was open to an independent run, he repeated, "Well, I'm going to have to see what happens. I will see what happens. I have to be treated fairly. You know, when I did this, I said I have to be treated fairly. If I'm treated fairly, I'm fine. All I want to do is a level playing field."

Mr. Trump also said he would bring back use of waterboarding, the controversial interrogation technique that simulates drowning and that is considered torture by many. President Barack Obama barred waterboarding and other harsh techniques at the start of his presidency.

If Trump wins the most votes and the GOPe uses some obscure rules to put one of their own shills in I will absolutely support a Trump third party run.

What would a 3-way race look like?

More like Clinton/Bush or Clinton/Rubio vs Trump/Cruz

either way,it’s gonna be FUN!

There used to be a major street in NYC named after Donald Trump, but the name was changed because no one crosses Donald Trump and lives.

Superman and Donald Trump once fought over a bet. The loser had to start wearing his underpants on the outside of his trousers.

When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Donald Trump.

Donald Trump can slam a revolving door.

Donald Trump was bit by a seven foot rattlesnake ........ After three days of pain and agony ..................the rattle snake died.

There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of animals Donald Trump allows to live.

Trump isn’t going to get bogged down over the CNN lies.

He has said all he needs for a debate is a room and a podium.

Those were almost his exact words when asked about unfair questions and moderators. He waved that stuff away as if it were irrelevant to him.

Trump can steamroll those guys with ease, and that why so many voters lover him.

"Trump never said this in the interview and wasn’t even obtuse or oblique in his answer . . ."

Regarding my post 20, I think that post 16 by Vendome answers my question.

As I understand it, to get around the "sore loser laws," he will have to pull out of the race before the primaries declare someone else a winner. Of course, that's a fuzzy procedure, but some election lawyer is probably already looking into it for Trump.

You don’t get the point - the RNC promised to back the nominee as well.

For the GOP to extract a promise from him then to attack him to push him out of the lead is reprehensible. It makes any agreement null and void.

It really doesn’t matter. Most trump supporters and none of the crossover voters are going to vote for a RINO. They will just stay home like they did for McCain and Romney.

At least if Trump ran as a third party candidate there would be a chance he would win.

With just the RINO against Clinton there isn’t even a chance.

Oh, noes!!!!

Let me guess....you trust the RNC more!!

Trump took Rinse Preschoolbus at his word. If Rinse goes back on his word, with GOPee dirty tricks, Trump is scott free to do the right thing, to right Rinse’s wrong.

Trump hits back....harder.

Trump will get around the "sore loser laws" and run as an independent OR organize a national write-in campaign.

And the odds are good that he'll win.

What party other than the GOP attempts to destroy its own frontrunner? Ponder that for awhile.

.
So much for that liar’s pledge to support the nominee!

Trump is in this to defeat conservatives, not to win.

“No matter who the Republican candidate would be, a third party Trump means hello President Hillary.”

The GOPe would prefer Hillary over Trump and/or Cruz.
