Anyone interested in this subject, and especially any Frenchman, ought to read The Battle of the Casbah by Gen. Paul Aussaresses. It recounts the methods used by France to successfully repress the FLN in 1956. Ironically, Aussaresses was prosecuted by Chirac in 2003 and eventually convicted of crimes against humanity and stripped of his decorations for employing exactly the same measures our French allies have now (correctly) decided to use against ISIS in 2015.
