Photo of the branch manager, Shamoura Welch-Robinson, may give a clue as to why this travesty occurred. I didn't see anyplace in the story where Ms.Welch-Robinson was fired. Surely Avis can't be keeping this wretched employee on?

Good for the Observer that they included a photo of the manager. That needs to happen more often so that you can burn their faces into your memory bank.

The agent’s supervisor agreed with the agent, so why beat up on the agent.
Why didn’t Mr. Bergwerk just use his passport and get on with his journey?
