ROCKUMENTARY: NOVEMBER 21, 1965

#6: Fontella Bass: "Rescue Me"

Fontella (1940-2012) came out of the Chicago gospel scene that provided openings for so many R&B artists. This was her one hit.

That's it until tomorrow night! Cue the Rockumentary theme on Turntable #1!

Herbert Alpert (b. 1935) came out of the Boyle Heights section of east Los Angeles back when the neighborhood was still Jewish. It isn't now!

It sure isn't. When he was living there, the main drag was called Brooklyn Avenue. Today, it's called Avenida Cesar Chavez.

Early Van Morrison sounds similar to Robert Plant.

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...ready to relax on the weekend? Is your fence finished?

Warmed up to the 20s and we had a couple inches of snow...possibly more overnight. Another storm is supposed to be coming, and then high 30s and rain mid-week...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Then more snow. We will see.

"Gloria" by Them was a hit in Southern California in the spring of 1965. It got a lot of airplay on KHJ, but it was apparently a regional hit. Other regional hits that never made it over the San Bernardino Mountains were Good Lovin' by the Olympics (1965), the acid rock classic Smashed! Blocked!--by John's Children (1966), Wedding Bell Blues by Laura Nyro (1966) and Here's to You by Hamilton Camp (1968)

Since we're in the fall of '65, here are a couple of protest songs from that time that protest the protesters.

The Universal Coward--Jan and Dean

The Dawn of Correction--The Spokesmen
