Russia has been in the Mediterranean for years now with the Russian Navy in and out of Tartus, Syria.
The recent cruise missile strikes from the Mediterranean were from two Tu-160s. They flew down from the Barents, Norwegian Sea, Altantic Ocean (were intercepted by the UK Royal Air Force) and continued into the Mediterranean via the Gibraltar Strait.
