Director Steven Spielberg, singer James Taylor and multihyphenate Barbra Streisand are set to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Obama administration said on Monday.
Producer Emilio Estefan, singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan and conductor Itzhak Perlman are also among Hollywood notables who will receive the honor on Nov. 24 at the White House.
Composer Steven Sondheim, who was awarded the honor last year but wasn't able to attend the 2014 ceremony, will be awarded the honor this month.
"I look forward to presenting these 17 distinguished Americans with our nation’s highest civilian honor," said the President in a statement. "From public servants who helped us meet defining challenges of our time to artists who expanded our imaginations, from leaders who have made our union more perfect to athletes who have inspired millions of fans, these men and women have enriched our lives and helped define our shared experience as Americans."
Last year, mogul Oprah Winfrey, actress Meryl Streep, singer Stevie Wonder and anchor Tom Brokaw were among the recipients. Spielberg was in attendance at last year's ceremony.

Obama sure does like his celebrities.
Why not Nobel Prizes? Or perhaps they could be sainted?
He likes the money they have is more like it.

“I’ll do anything to keep the country free. These individuals have made this country freer by their very existance, much as I have,” said Obama at a presser.
Once again Obama and his various coteries prove they can suck unimaginable objects through a garden hose. If Obama gave me one of those, I’d be ashamed and pissed.
Liberal awarding other liberals awards... Hollywood and various arms of the Democrat Party do this all the time (see Hillary’s various ‘awards’). Generally it’s a resume enhancer for the unemployable. At least these individuals have some demonstrable talent.
The man constantly proves how delusional he is.
Celebrities sure love giving each other awards. (yawn)
What, exactly, have they done?

How many syrian “refugees” will be relocated to their neighborhoods?
Spielberg deserves it. His films changed the way how movies were done and watched.

What was the freedom for which these awards were made?
Freedom FROM something is a much different concept than freedom FOR something. One is essentially contraction of the range of options, the other is an expansion of options.
I would suspect the “freedom” of which these awards speak is more on the order of the freedom from having to make one’s own decisions. This is a considerable relief for a lot of folks.
On so many levels.
Oh...and they’re going to shoe horn Yogi Berra into it too. The man who fired missiles from a tiny boat on d-day and was injured doing the same thing for the Marseilles invasion in August 44 Operation Dragoon. (And refused a Purple Heart because he didn’t want to worry his mother).
Don’t lump him into the thinned out ranks of this award. BS and Jaws.
