When he won, he was quoted that an incident shortly before the election won for him, where he said something like the following to a muslim woman in a burqa, and I am paraphrasing from memory knowing I'm botching it, but knowing it is a correct interpretation: "I will be happy when people like you can feel totally free to express yourselves in our country once again."

I read that is was the stroke that won him the election. It made me feel sick.
