"I had an Army buddy in Nam from there. He wasn’t a liberal and he told me that that part of Mass. was more conservative than the rest of the state."

That is correct, and I read here recently that were liberal and just voted in a bunch of R's. I hope a Mass Freeper can update us on this.

I suspect he is going their because it is and it is a blue collar almost Blue Dog Democrat City IMHO. Drove through it about 2 months ago, it still looks that way and it had been probably 20 year since I have driven through it ans noticed...

Worcester is the 2nd largest city in New England and yes, the whole area is more conservative.

There are a lot more conservatives in MA than people realize. This is a primary race at this point and Trump is smart enough to realize MA delegates count the same as delegates from a more conservative state. My wife and I are professionals, but we are prety hard core conservatives, despite both being born and raised in MA. Sure, we have plenty of liberals and legacy democrats in the family too. We went to a Cruz rally in MA in June and were shocked by the turn out, that early, and that was before Trump entered the race. Outside of 495, outside of the cities and Amherst, it is fairly conservative. People who work hard and own their own home tend to be conservative IMO. If trump is killing it in NH, he will kill it in MA primary too. Now the general is another story, but this could be an election like 84, though, I fear the demographic shifts make that unlikely. Trump is spot on in attacking the dishonest media. Many people are just so poorly informed due to their sources of information and public school indoctrination. I like to think that if the media was on average more honest, liberal progressives would get crushed, even here. I like Ted, but I think Trump can win and today's Trump is not wishy washy on 2nd amendment, border security & illegal immigration, common core, America first, etc. Trump/Cruz would be my preferred ticket at this point.

MA republicans and conservatives are two different animals.

To get elected you have to be a fiscal conservative and social moderate.

The religion in these parts are not as “strong.” There are a ton of colleges, so there is a lot of academia. The state house has been a Dem bastion forever, and we balance it every few years by electing republican Governors.

There are a lot of red parts of the states, usually the further away from any concentration of people. The parts of MA north, west, and south of Worcester are pretty middle of the road folks. Until you get to Springfield, which is a dump.
