Cruz Opposes Amnesty, Rubio Supported It, and Rubio Fails To See the Difference
National Review ^ | 11/14/2015 | Andrew McCarthy

The current intramural battle over immigration policy among GOP 2016 hopefuls, a most welcome and most necessary controversy, is a useful example of why the Senate is such a tough place from which to run for president. Few senators make it , only John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama in the last 60 years , and only after short Capitol Hill stints that yield thin voting records. The reason is clear: To be a good legislator and to move public opinion on important issues, a senator sometimes must make proposals that, taken out of context, can distort the senator's overarching position, creating the illusion that he favors what he clearly opposes, and vice versa. No one should know this better than Senator Marco Rubio. Yet Rubio, a major culprit when it comes to foolish immigration policy, is now straining to defend his walk on the wild side by misrepresenting the record of his rival, Senator Ted Cruz.

Cruz has cast himself as the Republican field's most consistent voice against "amnesty" for illegal aliens. Yet Rubio, with an assist from former Senator Rick Santorum, claims that Cruz has actually advocated granting legal status to illegal aliens. Taken out of context, the charge seems colorable. But under the circumstances as they actually occurred, the proposal Cruz made was a case of intelligent legislating designed to expose the fraudulence of the pro amnesty position. It was, in this way, reminiscent of smart legislating by Rubio (and, for that matter, by Cruz) that highlighted the folly of President Obama's Iran deal. It would be disingenuous to portray Rubio, an ardent Irandeal opponent, as an Iran deal supporter on this basis. Yet that is exactly what Rubio is trying to do to Cruz on immigration.

The entire article really exposes Rubio’s false narrative about Cruz.

Rubio is a better liar than Bill Clinton.

Occasionally we see articles like this one that show that at least some of the media is getting it.

Define Amnesty, my understanding of Cruz’s position is that legalizing illegals is not amnesty. Granting them citizenship is amnesty. Is Cruz going to deport, cut off government programs and enforce e-verify?

It would be nice if certain posters here now stopped trying to promulgate this false narrative.

Spread Rubio’s lie, in other words.

Yes ,he is going to deport and use all the measures you list. Please see Cruz’s detailed immigration plan listed under the “Breaking News” column on this forum.

Thanks for posting that. I have run into a few Trump supporters who seem determined to believe the smears that Sen. Rubio (one of the leading supporters of amnesty) is spreading about Sen. Cruz (the man who fought for us and beat him.) Its madness that they are determined to shoot the champion who fought for them and won over a tactic that he used to defeat the amnesty policies that they claim to hate.

I recently offended one of them for declaring that I didn’t care which candidate caused the illegals to go home, as long as they go home.

Apparently it matters very much to them WHO gets the credit.

Cruz has called legalization amnesty.

Can you point me to a source for that?

The deport part is pretty week, it looks like criminal only. Similar to what obumber has been saying for 8 years. And has not done. I think the last four presidents all had one immigration plan for campaigning and one they actually implemented. The implemented plan never aligns with the campaign promises. But the implemented plans do align with what big business and the chamber of commerce want or paid for. It's hard to denigh that history. Why is Cruz getting big dollars from these same entities?

What pro amnesty businesses are contributing to Cruz??

Cruz is a strict law enforcement guy. When he talks about enforcing immigration law, deportation is what he is talking about. From his speeches, I take it he prioritizes the deportation of criminals and those on public assistance.

Did you even bother to read the article at all? That was the very point of the article. It explained why Ted Cruz is/was NOT for legalizing illegals, let alone citizenship for them.

Ummmm..nno.

Similar to what obumber has been saying for 8 years.

Not even close.
Listen, when you wake up in the morning, give thanks to Ted Cruz, the man who fought hardest to stop the Gang of Eight and unconditional amnesty and citizenship for 12 million illegals, 12 million new Democratic Party voters and a permanent Democratic majority. I don't remember Donald Trump letting out as much as a squeak during that long, bitter hard fought battle to kill amnesty. Ted Cruz was the hero of that battle.

Trumps plan only mentions deportation once and is for criminals only.

And that's similar to what Obama as been saying for 8 years indeed.
