Molly i agree for the most part......a week in rural normandy was filled with splendid food, roses, intense historical siteseeing and french ppl who seemed to love america far more than i do lately......its that same urban/rural divide we have here, partly

I also concur that americans are emotionally intellectually and especially spiritually unequal to the task before us.......fear of the lord is the beginning of all knowledge (romans).......we are like blind pagan mice wandering around, willing to fight like hell for genital mutilation solar panels and free college for all yet unable to see the sword coming down on our necks

“Registered” is the key word. Even during WWII when France was stripped of firearms by the Nazis, there were families I know who kept firearms in their barns, attics, churches, and elsewhere...,(like in the top of a certain tree.) The French are very good at dissimulation. I would guarantee there are more firearms in France than the “registered” number. I myself owned one that should have been registered and know of others. Particularly prized are WWII weapons which are still highly serviceable. In fact, just a couple of weeks ago, I was thinking about buying one at a “Market” day in SouthWest France.
Most of the firearms credited in France I would think are long arms, some of which “should be’ registered but are probably not. My opinion: The number is low.

It is normal in rural France for a person to buy a hunting permit each year from the commune in which he lives, or some neighboring commune he likes to hunt. Several years ago, I had seven or eight individual permits for different communes which I bought each year. However, in order to obtain a communal permit, you must be the holder of a license issued after passage of the National Exams. When I got mine in the 80’s, I had to pass a rather lengthy written exam based on wildlife recognition (from pictures projected on a screen), French hunting law, safety practices, and general knowledge of firearms, etc. IF the applicant passed the written exam, a second exam which I will call a “Field Trial” was necessary. This entailed a few hours ( half day if I remember correctly)in the field in which obstacles were traversed with your firearm, “Targets” were exposed to your shot (or not, in the case of a road or house too close to the target) and other practical tests of one’s knowledge and exercise of gun safety. If BOTH exams were passed, you were issued a lifetime license. If you failed one, you had to try again the next year.I have always felt this examination was very well thought out and if one failed, he could study up and try again next year.

Thank you. I lived in France too. Last night it was to me almost as if we in the USA were attacked. It hurt bad and it still does today.
...........................................................
I felt the same way. And I just left France last Saturday, stopped over in Copenhagen for a couple of days, and am now at home in Florida. Have been on the phone with friends over there. Anger is running very high.

You are exactly right. My son who was in the First Gulf War has often spoken very highly of the French during that conflict. According to him, “The French were about the only ones besides us (Marines) who knew what the hell they were doing.”

Thanks, Sally. I think every American should visit Belleau Wood, and Normandy, especially Omaha Beach. For some reason, those who know the least seem to ‘spout off” the most. I get tired of the French bashing.

When did weddings become occasions for firecrackers? It’s not like you’re declaring your independence.

Our SIL has had his license since he was a teen so probably almost 20 years. He comes from an affluent family. They have a hunting lodge up in the mountains somewhere. Our DIL said that the govt is slowly making it a little harder to get new licenses in a long term plan to get rid of the guns.

My friends are from near the Basque country. Definitely not your average Paris wuss. Farmers hunters and winos. Just like family.

You have to have a “valid reason” to own a gun in the UK.

The same to carry in New Jersey, but unless you're "connected" the reason is never valid enough.

You’re the one that wrote ENGLAND is a GUN FREE ZONE. The simple truth as you proved yourself...it is not.

But in effect it is. Just like New Jersey, you can show why all day, but if you're not "connected" the why is never sufficient.

They have “slowly been trying” since the 80’s. I marched in the only “demonstration” I have ever participated in against some gun or hunting control law in 1989 or 1990. I was in full hunting attire and carried a shotgun. We were several thousand. The law was never passed. They have made it more difficult for the hunting clubs to have “Turkey shoots” through a series of rules and regulations. There are far less “Shoots than there were twenty or so years ago, but there are still some. I shot in one this past August that I first participated in over twenty five years ago.
I would imagine Holland and his left wing buddies are trying to get gun control, but I doubt they will ever succeed with rural France.

Not quite gun-free. There are 2 million legally-owned guns in the U.K.
