President Obama on Thursday slammed Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s latest controversial plan to crack down on illegal immigration.
“The notion that we’re gonna deport 11, 12 million people from this country — first of all, I have no idea where Mr. Trump thinks the money’s gonna come from," Obama said in an interview with ABC News's George Stephanopoulos. "It would cost us hundreds of billions of dollars to execute that."
Obama’s rebuke came after Trump raised the possibility of creating a “deportation force” to remove immigrants living in the U.S. illegally.
“Imagine the images on the screen flashed around the world as we were dragging parents away from their children, and putting them in what, detention centers, and then systematically sending them out,” the president said.
“Nobody thinks that that is realistic. But more importantly, that’s not who we are as Americans.”
Immigration has emerged as one of the biggest wedge issues in the 2016 presidential race, thanks in large part to Trump’s inflammatory remarks about undocumented workers.
The real estate mogul renewed his calls for mass deportations during Tuesday night’s GOP primary debate in Milwaukee. But in doing so, he drew criticism from several of his rivals.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich called Trump’s plan “silly” and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush predicted Democrats would use the candidate’s heated rhetoric to scare off Hispanic voters from supporting Republicans.
“They’re doing high-fives in the Clinton campaign right now when they hear this,” Bush said.
Clinton on Wednesday called Trump’s plan “absurd, inhumane and un-American.”
Asked why some Americans might be attracted to Trump’s plan, Obama said he is tapping into “a strain of anti-immigrant sentiment in America, ironically, from folks who themselves two generations back or even one generation back were immigrants themselves.”
“It’s the job of leaders not to play into that sentiment,” he added. “We don’t want, I think, a president or any person in a position of leadership to play on those kinds of fears.”
During an interview Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Trump doubled down on his plans to deport the nation’s estimated 11.7 million illegal immigrants with a “deportation force.”
"You're going to have a deportation force," Trump said. "You're going to do it humanely.”
The little child weighs in.
Obama claims to have deported 2 billion people. Was it that hard??
Well, 2 million, really.
Well, it would probably cost Obamalamadingdong hundreds of billions to do it, probably need a new government agency like Department of Migrant Refusal or something.
Trump will make the Mexicans pay for it.
Hmm, Obama must think most Americans respect his opinion.
Going to be an interesting fight all the way through the primary.
Krauthammer spouting the Fox line on Bair’s panel. .
Well, people that don’t have a legitimate U.S. birth certificate would be concerned. Oh wait, it suddenly showed up - four or five years later. Or something.
So this is no surprise.
first of all, I have no idea where Mr. Trump thinks the moneyâs gonna come from
My Response for Trump:
The first $20 Million will come from Eliminating Secret Service Protection for former Presidents!
How do you deport? Easy, make it a felony to hire or house an illegal.
We can’t deport 20 million illegal aliens, but we can intimidate 200 million Americans into paying taxes at a confiscatory rate every year.
Do those things and illegal aliens will deport themselves and pay for the trip.
Motivation is a powerful force and it doesn't cost much money.
What is the “we” of whom you speak, Kenyan???
Go, Trump, GO!!
Trump's plan would get rid of those out to destroy this country, heroin recruiters, pedophiles, terrorists, rapists, and other criminals. That does not sit well with Obama.
Perhaps the Current Occupant’s “Civilian National Security Force”, which was to be “just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the military, could be used for this purpose.
Just redirect the #BlackLivesMatter thugs to the task, along with the Black Panthers and the Louis Farrakhan Million Man March.
Plenty of manpower.
The Mexicans will have that wall built at record speed, even more quickly than The Donald promises.
â... first of all, I have no idea where Mr. Trump thinks the moneyâs gonna come from,”... “It would cost us hundreds of billions of dollars to execute that.”...
He has never worried about where money would come from to pay for his various Country devastating “programs.”
Just more “Death to Americans!” from Hussein.
Suddenly money is an issue with this guy?
