A Kremlin-owned TV network âaccidentallyâ airs footage of specs for Russiaâs frightening new underwater nuclear weapon. Is it just a ruse to talk up Moscowâs military might?
A stray camera at a meeting of top Russian military leaders has allegedly captured a glimpse of the Kremlinâs possible plan for a bewildering and frightening new weaponâa radiation-scattering âdirty bomb.â One delivered by a drone submarine, which itself rides piggyback on another submarine.
The problem is: We have no way of knowing for sure if this is in fact an existing weapon or simply a media provocation designed to make us think that Russian President Vladimir Putin has got a dangerous new toy in his arsenal. If itâs real, then Russia is the first country we know about to come into possession of a weapon that, while not nearly as destructive as an atomic bomb, could spread lethal radiation over a wide area, rendering it uninhabitable. If the segment is a fake, itâs the latest in a long list of Kremlin media hoaxes.
âItâs true some secret data got into the shot, and it was subsequently deleted,â Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday about the mysterious footage. âWe hope that this wonât repeat.â
The technical aspects of such a device arenât all that complicated. A dirty bomb is simply any munition containing conventional explosives wrapped in radioactive material. It explodes like any normal munition, but the fragments it scatters are irradiated and thus more dangerous for far longer periods of time than the debris from any standard bomb.
Compared to nuclear weapons, dirty bombs are easy to makeâand their use, while highly provocative, is less likely to spark global Armageddon. But theyâre still nasty enough that, back in the 1970s, the United States and Russia came pretty close to banning them.

This thread was significant for me and the timing was uncanny. I had one of my own comments removed. Perhaps I will say more later. We’ll see. But, FWIW.

I own a copy of that movie.
[will STILL swallow the hype!]
You make a huge mistake in assuming we’re typing everything we’re thinking. We are not that stupid.
That’s only ICBM’s - MMIII missile bodies (MX warheads).
450 was the last number I saw.
That does not include the 14 Ohios, B-61’s (later production) and B-83’s, plus “special” Tomahawks, etc.
Dirty bombs are different bud. Designed to create fallout, not explosions. You will be like the USS Reagan sitting downwind from Fukushima as they vent nuclear reactors melting out of containment. The sailor they went up to retrieve the US flag for the Japanese set off radiation exposure alarms when he came back. They was a video out there for awhile showing when he set off the alarms.
Thanks, but I know what they are and how they work.
Designed to create fallout, not explosions.
Not sure what point you are trying to make here. The nuclear tests were done below ground, above ground, in the water.
In each case, there was radioactive matter dispersed through the soil, water, and air.
Not as much matter as you would get from a dirty Bomb. Clean bombs give off more energy less matter. One time quick burst. Radioactive matter from dirty bombs hangs around a long time. Less burst. Guess we will eventually learn that some time in the future.
