For Immigrants In U.S. Illegally, Rubio Favors 'Very Long Path' To Citizenship

Sen. Marco Rubio clarified his view on the 11 million immigrants, who are in the United States illegally. The day after a presidential debate, which exposed a continuing divide in the Republican Party on immigration, Rubio told NPR Wednesday he favors a path to citizenship for some, though the prospect would be very distant.

"If you haven't been here very long, or you're a criminal, you will be deported," Rubio told NPR's Morning Edition. "Otherwise, you will have to come forward, pass the background check, learn English, pay a fine, because you violated the law, start paying taxes, and you'll get a work permit. And that's all you're going to have for at least a decade."

But Rubio went a step further. "After 10 years on the work permit, I personally am open to after the 10 years have expired to allowing people to apply for a green card, just through the normal process that anyone else would use."

That means Rubio still broadly backs one of the most hotly debated portions of a 2013 immigration bill that passed the Senate overwhelmingly but could not get through the Republican-controlled House. Rubio helped author the legislation, but later dismissed it as politically unsustainable.

Like some other candidates, Rubio has spoken of allowing some kind of legal status for some of the 11 million. A green card confers the status of a permanent resident and the ability to work legally, with an eventual option to apply for citizenship.

When pressed, Rubio acknowledged that this amounted to a path to citizenship, which many in his party have derided as "amnesty." Rubio, however, described his proposal as "a very long path" to citizenship.

"I personally am open to that," he said. "That is not a majority position in my party

If you are allowed to stay here, work here, and live here, why would you need a green card. Isn’t allowing someone to live here legally effectively the same thing?

Rewarding criminals with US citizenship—What could possibly go wrong.

Giving citizenship to illegal aliens to me is like passing a law that says if you rob a bank and don't get arrested for it, within 5 years of the robbery , you can keep the money. -tom

It’s a given there will be push back from those that make a living off Illegals, with 14th amendment suits. Fine let those suits be filed and work their way through the courts. But the plaintiffs can monitor the progress from their native countries.

“Let’s be clear,” Rubio said. “Nobody is talking about preventing the legalization. The legalization is going to happen. That means the following will happen: First comes the legalization. Then come the measures to secure the border. And then comes the process of permanent residence.” 6/9/2013 on Univision

Contrary to the prevailing sentiment here, I can live with that on a case-by-case basis. But first, BUILD THE DAMNED WALL! Then decide who stays and who goes.

A "long path to citizenship".....

What difference is it if it's 3 years, 5 years, or Rubio's latest change-of-heart "10 years"? The millions upon millions of legal and illegal squatter's and border-crossers are and will be STILL displacing American workers armed with Rubio-endorsed work permits.

Lest anyone has forgotten or hasn't figured it out yet, Marco Antonio Rubio is an anchor baby LATINO, and blood is thicker than water. He's for amnesty now or "10 years" (120 months) from now. What's the difference? We'll be outnumbered vote-wise in a few short years, anyhow, if the influx continues.

I don't trust Rubio at all. Anyone who thinks even the slickest, sleekest leopard can or will change its inbred spots is a fool.

If that path includes returning to their home country, living there until they pass away, and then being reborn and applying for legal entry, I agree with Rubio.

Anything short of that? FUMR

So, do they get to keep their welfare??

No, and neither do the ghetto rats, methhead trailer trash, scammers and schemers who populate the ranks of the EBT class.

End welfare; replace it with charity and workfare.
