The Meaninglessness Of Ben Carson’s Views On Egyptian Pyramids
RedState ^ | 11/05/2015 | streiff

So the left is all abuzz over Ben Carson’s 1998 speech in which he expressed an, admittedly, exotic view on the purpose of Egyptian pyramids. (This is a another hard-hitting click-bait piece by BuzzFeed cub reporter Andrew Kaczynski, so no link because I try not to reward bad behavior.)

At the 1998 commencement for Andrews University, a school associated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Carson also dismissed the notion that aliens were somehow involved in the construction of the pyramids.

“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain,” Carson said. “Now all the archeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain.”

In the Old Testament, Joseph, one of the 12 sons of Jacob, is sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers. He eventually rose to become a top aide to the Egyptian pharaoh, advising him of a dream vision he had of coming years of famine in the ancient kingdom. Joseph’s sage advice of the coming famine (and directions to store gain) helped the Egyptians survive the famine.

Carson said the design of the pyramids made clear they were for grain storage.

“And when you look at the way that the pyramids are made, with many chambers that are hermetically sealed, they’d have to be that way for various reasons. And various of scientists have said, ‘Well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that’s how—’ you know, it doesn’t require an alien being when God is with you.”

“Ted Cruz is too clever to make these Aikenesque statements . . .”

Dig back far enough into his speech history and see what comes up. Carson’s theory is far from preposterous and has absolutely no bearing on the office to which he aspires. To think great pyramid theories make or break a presidential candidate places you into the “low information voter” camp as far as I’m concerned - the kind that think they are smarter than everyone else. You’ve got the great pyramids nailed, eh? There when they were built?

Answer: Sarah Palin can see Russia from Alaska.

The result of this was a perception in the public’s mind that has endured. It made her a laughing stock. Now I realize it is true, that you can see Russia from Alaska, but most people do not. Therefore, the criticism persists.

Ben shot himself in the foot with this one. It makes him look like some kook and it will stick because he reaffirmed his position.

It’s not just “out there” its full on “nutter town”. The history of Pyramids in Egypt is well known. The “Great” pyramids were not the first, nor were they the last Pyramids build, every one from the earliest step pyramids on have all been found to be tombs.

As you point out, such massive buildings, almost entirely of solid mass, with very little open space, and passageways that can barely be navigated are not the construct of an advanced civilization attempting to store food.

Carson is clearly a smart, educated and driven man, so for him to advocate this as a theory is pretty much a double take, What The? Moment. I’m not sure what would motivate his thinking to propose such a claim, but its clear whatever it is, it isn’t based on empirical evidence.

Sorry. I do not assign that kind of weight to a man’s theory about pyramids.

“WTF would you feel compelled to make such a declaration?”

Ha! That reminds me of a a “Trailer Park Boys” episode. They were making a video to advertise their unlicensed strip club and the guy says on the video “our dancers are now 100% crab-free!”

Some things, you just don’t want to disclose!

That thought occurred to me too. They took the few actual rooms and used them for royal burial chambers. That left narrow tunnels and stairways for grain storage?

I wonder how many of the people here ridiculing Carson for his pyramid use theory believe in a six day creation, Adam and Eve, the parting of the seas, Jonah and the whale, Daniel and the lions, the Virgin birth or the resurrection of Christ?

For that matter, how many actually believe the story of Joseph?

From an internet article on pyramids:

The first pyramid to be built was the Stepped Pyramid of Djoser (Netjerikhet) which is part of a complex in Saqqara Egypt that appears to be a grain storage and distribution center. The Step Pyramid itself was built on top of a shaft that was originally used as a grain silo but then converted into a tomb for the Pharaoh. The Step Pyramid is really a series of Mastabas, made from solid limestone blocks, stacked up on top of one another. The Step Pyramid was used to bury Netjerikhet’s 3 wives and 11 daughters and Netjerikhets sarcophagus was placed on a platform in the shaft beneath the Stepped Pyramid.

Does the inspired Word of God say Joseph built the pyramids for grain storage?

Why not post the link? One assumes it is a respected Egyptology site, correct?

It’s a bit strange, to offer any kind of equivalence between belief in God’s revealed Word and the non-Biblical ideas of a mere mortal.
