Perhaps. But, to be more accurate, you could say it was done by Sunni, who may or may not be aligned with ISIS or may or may not be funded by ISIS.

There are two wars in Syria: a civil war and a religious war between Shia and Sunni.

Putin has entered the religious war on the side of the Shia, so all Sunni, regardless of where they stand on ISIS, now consider Russia to be the enemy.

The Sunnis in Iraq ( Iraq military not ISIS) and Egypt are with Putin

Putin has support of Sunnis who are wiling to back secular governments, not the extremists who want sharia and a caliphate

Russians are hinting at making contacts with “ patriots”in the Assad opposition , those who are fighting for Syria, not for sharia or a caliphate
