I say, have two smart guns—one to toss to the perp, and the other to gun the bastard down while he fumbles with it.

That sounds like a plan.

Good thinking

Bingo. They are like a creeping, mass reproducing disease plague - New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, Florida, Colorado, you name it. They crap all over their beds in their own states, then when the mess is too much for even them to bear, they go ruin somebody else’s backyard. NEXT Target Of THE PLAGUE - Pa.

Better still, make their guards carry them. Also prohibit elected officials from personally carrying anything else.

I ran against Loretta Weinberg for NJ State Assembly in 1999 in our heavily Democrat district. In 2002, I participated in a protest against the "smart gun" bill Weinberg sponsored. You can see the news article and my letter-to-the-editor response which decried the planned smart guns. The FR article is Gun backers protest smart-gun bill. An excerpt:

"One of the mosts damning aspects of this bill is that "smart" gun technology was initially developed to protect police from being shot with their own guns when a criminal wrested their guns from them. Yet, this bill exempts local, state and federal police from being required to use these disabled weapons! The police do not want to be required to use "smart" guns for good reason -- their unreliability in a crisis situation. Why force them on the rest of us?

Basically, a so-called "smart" gun is a broken gun. It is designed not to work except under an extraodinarily limited set of conditions. Responsible people cannot rely on its proper functioning on the rare occaision it is needed, nor can it be depended on for sufficiently rapid response. It is virtually impossible to test the biometric technologies proposed under the kind of high stress conditions that a life-threatening crisis creates." …
