I like 9mm and .45. 9mm is a bit cheaper.
But I’m trying to get a .45 though I’ll have to go into the extra caliber ammo.

Start out with a 22LR like the Ruger SR22 and get used to shooting a pistol. Once your good at it buy an American 9MM, 40 or 45.
