A Russian airliner has crashed in central Sinai with more than 200 people on board, the office of Egypt's prime minister has confirmed.

The Airbus A-321 had just left the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, bound for the Russian city of St Petersburg.

Wreckage of the plane has been found in the Hassana area and bodies removed. An official described a "tragic scene".

Flight KGL9268 disappeared from radar screens when travelling at 9,500m (31,000ft), Egyptian officials said.

Egyptian president’s office says the plane crashed on BBC Radio 2 News at 8am.

I hope BBC Radio 2 News was not too severely damaged by having a plane crash on them. But at least we know the time!

The Airbus belonging to Kogalymavia, a small airline based in Western Siberia...

If you cant trust Kogalymavia, who can you trust?

“The Airbus belonging to Kogalymavia”

It was operated by Metrojet, a Russian airline. It was actually American (as in USA) owned. And maintenance was top notch, not done by Russians.

After viewing some of the aircraft telemetry, IMUO, we have 3 possibilities:

Least Likely: Brought down by a Missile. - Has to be a consideration based on where and how it came down.

Possible: On-board bomb

Most likely (in my Opinion):
Yet ANOTHER Angle-of-Attack Indicator problem leading to yet another loss of an Airbus.

Don’t rule out airframe failure due to previous damage/repair.

Time of flight is similar to China Airlines Flight 611, that broke up in flight due to an improper repair 22 years previous!

Good writeup on 611:

Damage to KGL9268 (same airplane):

You mean 2.6km (or abt 16,900 feet). The Igla-S variants are in the theater, but are usually the truck-mounted Strelets variant, not shoulder launched. Range on the SA 24 is about 6km or 19600 feet. Not enough for an airliner, you need something like the system that shoot down MA-17 - a Buk surface-to-air 9M38 - SA-17

Initial reports from Egypt said the pilot of the Kogalymavia airline had asked to make an emergency landing.

But minister Hossam Kamal said there had been no sign of any problems on board the flight.

Lufthansa and Air France-KLM said they would avoid the route while the cause of the crash was investigated.

A claim by a group allied to the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Sinai that it brought down the plane has been dismissed by Russia and Egypt.

A security officer at the scene told the Reuters news agency that the plane was split in two, “a small part of the tail end that burned and a larger part that crashed into a rock”.

Egyptian civil aviation officials say both of the plane’s “black boxes” have been found, but it is not yet clear what caused the crash. Analysing the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder will help investigators ascertain what happened.

The flight tracking website Flightradar24 said that just before the radar signal was lost the aircraft started to descend with a vertical speed of about 6,000ft (1,830m) per minute.

At first I thought it might be a Strela-Bloc, but apparently it is not. What is it?

26,000 foot ceiling for Stinger SAM.

Don’t know if that was it. Seems like they said the aircraft was higher than that. But it does seem that the Ruskies are going to consider it an attack by their enemies and reply accordingly. I remember when the USA use to do that.

Just guessing, but if they really are finding wreckage and bodies in a 5 km area of some sort, that means it broke up on the way down. Flight 93 went straight into the ground intact.

Telemetry indicated a six minute, almost vertical descent. It could still have been a bomb, but it hit the ground mostly intact going 400 miles an hour. Yet plenty of wreckage and bodies - nothing "vaporized" like Flight 93.
