Offhand Comment From Jeb Bush Draws Ire of Psych Majors
NBC News ^ | October 30, 2015 | Amy DiLuna

Posted on 10/30/2015 6:40:19 PM PDT by monkapotamus

The Republican contender implied at a town hall in South Carolina on Saturday that psychology degrees don't lead to good job prospects.

"When a student shows up, they ought to say 'Hey, that psych major deal, that philosophy major thing, that's great.' It's important to have liberal arts ... but realize, you're going to be working at Chick-fil-A..."

Psychology students and graduates quickly mobilized, tweeting their stories of personal and career successes using the hashtag #ThisPsychMajor.

#ThisPsychMajor will finish grad school and make six figures for her family before 25 pic.twitter.com/3zrLIR0mSk

Jeb is a liberal arts major.

And its not like STEM majors are doing well and most technical jobs will be obsolete in 10 years.

The most important thing you can do is become smarter, at everything, and learn how to think,

My kid is in the defense industry with a couple degrees, clearances and 8 years in the AF on their top aircraft. She -—might-— hit 6 figures in a couple years. If she keeps doing well.

The entitlement these kids have amazes me. They think they are going to START at a point most in a given profession/field retire from.

I majored in Psych for two semesters. My professors were as nutty as squirrel turds. That alone made me switch majors.

Kudos to your kid Norm. It took me 13 years after I left the Corps. First 3 years in shipping industry then into computer certification schools then into a very large financial firm (same company I’m with today 13 years in.) Two years into the job moved into Management. This was done through technology certifications through tech schools without college. Once I hit the 6 figure then I went to college. Hard work and perseverance can get you there. College isn’t necessary at all times

"Psych Major, has your self esteem been damaged because of Jeb's microaggression? Just say these words to yourself in the mirror every day until your self esteem recovers..."

1. I'm good enough
2. I' smart enough
3. And gosh darn it, people like me!

Oh, and one other thing, keep taking out student loans to fund our university football team.

Mr Viking, it is a good thing you got out without catching “Stockholm Syndrome”, or you might still be in school, swearing your professors are right about everything!

I used to agree with Jeb on this. Then my daughter got her PhD in psychology, landed a cushy full benefit job at a major university, started her own consulting business on the side and landed her first book deal all at the age of 28. She also managed to do all this without any student loan debt. They basically paid her to do her research for the five years of grad school.

It’s really not about the choice of major. It’s about the work ethic of the individual. She was going to do well no matter what her major was. I admit the psych choice made me a bit nervous, but she was right all along. BTW, She is in research not clinical practice.

She got her degrees while in the AF so she wouldn’t have to deal with it later and got most of it covered. So glad she did. Business management.

What was funny is how basic the ‘education’ needed today to get a 4 year is in that subject. It sure as hell ain’t what it used to be. But if it gets her up the ladder so be it.

She used to call me occasionally about papers and whatnot for advice on how to best write them (I’m a writer) and I would just shake my head at the lemonade stand crap they were ‘teaching’.

I actually ‘wrote’ one of her papers pretty much (gave her ALL the stuff to say) and her teacher went bug nuts that she was some kind of business savant. The kicker is that I literally did ‘creatively expand’ on nothing more than the logic of running a lemonade stand with foo-foo terms and buzzwords.

She got her degree from a “highly regarded” school BTW ;)

My Sociology 101 prof handed out a course syllabus at the beginning of the semester. Every class, he'd start with the subject matter, then spin off on some Socialist tirade that in most cases, had nothing to do with the material at hand. I aced my mid-term AND the course, and had no idea what I was supposed to learn, or even what I'd said.

It’s stunning how easily people equate buzzwords with actual ability today. It’s the result of removing critical thinking and logic classes from schools. Real ones not the common core propaganda idiocy ‘critical thinking’ stuff they dreamed up to cover their asses.

Every time I watch Idiocracy I see more and more examples in every day life. I think most of the hard science degrees are still valid because they have to be. But anything that libs are able to propagandize from are another story.

You have business schools turning out anti-capitalists, Med schools turning out euthanasia advocates and philosophy courses graduating the most closed minded bigots I have ever encountered. Then you have theology courses arguing against God so I am not remotely shocked about the state of America or the world.

Sounds like your professor was suffering from a combination of Dunning-Kruger and Self-serving Bias. No doubt his Psychbabble put you into this stupor.

Excellent paragraph right here and spot on. Is there any wonder why schools today don’t drive the hard sciences and defer to the social feel good sciences? My daughters 13 and 10 I’ve driven into them math and science over and over again. So much so that their favorite subjects are now the two. So much success can be derived from these two subjects alone.

I was horrid at math. Failed Algebra twice. My mind is not wired to ‘do math’. It I had the ability to grasp it, my life would have taken a far different course. Abstraction I am great with...until it involves numbers. Then it’s vaporlock.

Science I always loved deeply but advanced science gets into...math. My best subjects were always history/social studies related. How I ever ended up in writing/journalism is beyond me. Chalk it up to happy accident.
