Americans aren't giving up their guns
Pittsburgh Tribune Review ^ | October 26, 2015 | John R Lott Jr

Despite several years of Michael Bloomberg and others spending hundreds of millions of dollars attacking the NRA, a new Gallup poll shows that non-gun owners have a favorable opinion of the NRA (by 7 percentage points). Moderates are even 17 percentage points more likely to have a favorable opinion.

Overall, the NRA has a significantly more favorable image than either President Obama or Hillary Clinton.

Yet, according to Adam Winkler in The Washington Post, the NRA will inevitably decline in power.

The claim is a simple one: Gun ownership is greatest among rural whites, a group whose voting power is diminishing.

The theory isn't new. Tom Smith, director of the General Social Survey, told me in 1997 that the large drop in gun ownership shown by his poll would “make it easier for politicians to do the right thing on guns.” According to Smith's survey, the percentage of homes with a gun has fallen fairly continuously since the 1970s — from approximately 50 percent to 32 percent earlier this year.

But other surveys by . . . .

Before giving up our guns, we must consider this:

I guess they did not get the memo about doing the same thing and failing every time....

I am looking for the ATF to bring their long tables out this weekend for another photo shoot of legal firearms.

Ah. I see..make it easier for politicians to do the "right" thing on guns.

That means doing an end run around the Constitution, which they have been trying to do for years, and still are.

I was shopping for any of several guns a few years ago for self defense - not sport. ALL OF THOSE WEAPONS HAVE DOUBLED IN PRICE! Supply and demand. I am a bit frustrated, but glad to know they are being dispersed generally.

AR-15 prices are at record lows and ammo is available too.
But you snooze, you may loose.

"The claim is a simple one: Gun ownership is greatest among rural whites, a group whose voting power is diminishing."

I believe there are a lot of rural and urban dwellers, including White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic, and Native Americans who would take umbrage with this statement. We have enough education about history on the subject, and examples of how the lefts view of "gun control" actually plays out.

You bet your life and freedom on whether you hold or let go of your constitutional 2nd amendment freedom...

Wouldn't it be nice to have a committed Second Amendment supporter in the White House?

Thanks! I will check into that. I wanted an M14 but they are out of budget. I see some criticisms of them too, although I heard a lot of praise for them from some vets. Ammo would be more problematical too. Eventually.

Is there any correlation between “mass shootings” and White House occupants? Seems to me there’s been a drastic increase since January 2009. Could be me though.

Mr. Dice has it absolutely right. Prices and availability of weapons and ammunition in defense/combat calibers are pretty near optimal, right now. The present time is a buying opportunity.

.22LR is still far from optimal.

AR’s are cheaper now than ever. You can get one for under $500 if you are a good shopper.

“the NRA will inevitably decline in power”

They used the term ‘NRA’ to hide the projection what they mean is the people. Saying ‘NRA’ makes it sound less threatening than saying the “American people”...but I know exactly what their intent is.

They seem to believe that the Second Amendment is contingent on the popularity of the NRA.

The NRA is like a fat old German Shepard. Sleepy looking until you piss it off.

>>“We cannot complain about lack of demand,” Stephen Mayer, a gun merchant, told Trioler Tageszeitung. He claims the stock has been sold out for the last three weeks and that demand is being fueled by fears generated by social changes.

"Social Change." Gang rape and beating of women. Sodomizing boy sex slaves. Sharia law. Stoning rape victims. Attacking Jews and synagogues in daylight. Yes, that's "social change" all right. Euroliberals are getting their social change all right, good and hard.

he claim is a simple one: Gun ownership is greatest among rural whites, a group whose voting power is diminishing.

Oh, sure, in an environment where half the politicians and most of the media are damning gun owners and threatening to restrict your rights, how many of you are going to admit to some random stranger who calls you "for a survey" that you own guns? First of all, it may be a thief, who will turn around and rob your home the first minute he knows you're not home and, second, even if he's not a thief, why would you want to make it easier for the government to compile a list of gun owners (and, a little later, come around just like a thief and do the same thing, with a few extra bonuses like killing your dog, body-slamming your pregnant wife, holding a loaded full-auto to your kid's head, fun stuff like that).

I would judge the number of gun owners by other means. For instance, the number of guns in this country has risen by approximately 80 million since Obama took office (on its way to 100 million new guns from 1/2009 - 1/2017), for a total of approximately 380 million now. Alternatively, just here in Texas the number of CHL (carry permit) holders has risen from approximately 249,000 on 12/31/2005 to approximately 826,000 as of 12/31/14 - an increase of about 231% IN THE NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS with a CHL in just 10 years. Those statistics mitigate HEAVILY toward increased numbers of families buying guns, not just a few "extremists" who are "hoarding" weapons for a zombie apocalypse, government takeover or Chinese/Russian invasion.

asking around, consensus is that about 3 to maybe at most 5% of American citizens would agree to comply or would fail to resist any attempted confiscations or ‘forced buybacks’ (sic)

the other 95 or 97% of Americans would be using their firearms for their Constitutionally-intended purpose

They’ve defined “mass shooting” downward. Body count need only be 3, shooter included. Used to be higher, and exclusive of perp’s continuing metabolic status.
