Patriarch Kirill: The West is no longer Christian

Western countries do not identify themselves with the Christian tradition and harass those who defend Christian values, said Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill on Wednesday at a meeting with US preacher Franklin Graham at the St. Daniel Monastery. "Russian Church during the Cold War was actively developing relations with Western Christians. We were living in difficult conditions of atheistic ideology and perceived Western civilization as Christian civilization. We appreciated the freedom in which they lived, Christians in the West, and considered them our brothers and allies" - said the Patriarch.

He stressed with regret that in recent years "there have been radical changes in the spiritual and religious life in the West - Western countries have ceased to identify themselves with the Christian tradition, moved to the idea of a society in which Christian values should not dominate."

Patriarch noted that today many countries have laws that allow same-sex marriages, and "people who disagree with them are being persecuted."

Russian church broke any relationship and communication with those religious organizations that support same-sex marriage, get same-sex couples married in churches, allow representatives of different sexual orientation to take holy orders, stressed the patriarch, noting that due to a number of conservative Protestant churches, the ROC has to continue dialogue with Christians of America.

AXIOS!

(Side note: This really should be moved to the religion forum. It will get a lot more attention there.)

In general, he is correct. Lamps have gone out over most of the West.

This is counter-intuitively ironic, but soon, the West will be MORE Christian because of the rise of anti-Christian society.

The real issue (I’ll get flamed, I’m sure) isn’t whether the West is Christian, it’s whether the West is sensible and moral. The Judeo-Christian tradition provided that structure, but now it’s not taken seriously. After all, if the Church touts gays, and the priests are gay, isn’t it a disincentive? Modern media culture is so much more seductive, to boot.

Time to bring the good news of the Gospel back to the West!

Probably better defined as “post-Christian”, as there is no longer much piety expressed or even identified in vast swathes of what is called the “Western world”.

These conditions are ripe for the blandishments of some fiery brand of “religion” like Islam, which is not so much a real religion as it is an ideology, as determined as the most fervent Communist or Nationalist Socialist, which differ in only a few minor points, but like Sunni Islam and Shi’ite Islam, find plenty of incompatibilities between themselves.

The Catholic church does not constitute the entirety of western Christianity.

Islam, presented cleverly, would make serious inroads into the West. Fortunately they haven’t figured that out yet. Agree about post-Christian, but God is not mocked, and will have something to say about it all soon enough.

Europe, at a minimum, will pay dearly for its apostasy. They will probably go through something that makes the Wars of Religion seem like a family picnic, and the Nazis seem like overbearing cops.

A young man who grew up in our neighborhood is a Christian missionary trying to spread the Word...in Berlin. He says Germany in general is the most atheistic country in Europe, and Berlin is the most atheistic city in Germany. The Germans, to their credit, are at least polite atheists. They listen to what he has to say, shrug their shoulders and move on. They are completely out of touch with their spiritual heritage and have no interest in going back to it.

I said “to their credit” they are polite in distinction with the pathologically hostile militant evangelical atheists you find in the United States.

But I wonder if the Muslim invasion will bring a few of them around.

During the Cold War the Russian Church was nothing but a front for the KGB and the Communist government.

Good points. Islam is an engine that runs on sex and violence. And now that I think of it, isn’t that what modern Western entertainment/culture revolves around? I’ve wondered at the strange alliance between secular atheism and Islamic jihadism, but this thought may help me make sense of it.

“The Catholic church does not constitute the entirety of western Christianity.”

There are surely a few FReepers around here who would argue that it does! :)

And many who would argue that it's not even Christian. ;-)

Why, yes thats true.

As the West rejects Christianity it will cease to matter as a force in history. It will implode.

Those denominational "churches" that reject Biblical Christianity will also implode, and cease to matter. They will be replaced and forgotten. You will always have churches that let go of their foundation, and the Spirit of God simply finds more fertile ground.

They just don’t last long.
