This new Ted Cruz rap song is surprisingly good [Video]

But every once in a while a politics-themed song comes out that is not so bad. I've long been a fan of this tune that urged people to write-in Charlie Wilson for Congress. (It worked! Wilson won!) And now — from the most unlikely of sources — comes another song I dig: A rap ditty in support of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.)'s presidential campaign.

Here's "Time for Truth" by someone named "jukworld."

Before I go any further, let me note that I am not the rap aficionado that fellow Fixer Philip Bump is. (Read his wrong-but-interesting screed on why Biggie was better than Tupac here.) But, I have listened to hip hop for a very long time and know what I like (De La Soul, Tribe, Earl Sweatshirt) and what I don't (Sean Combs). So, with that said...

THIS IS A PRETTY CATCHY SONG.

The chorus, in particular, is pretty good! (Unnecessary/necessary note: I mean "good" in terms of its rhyme structure and rhythm, not in terms of its sentiments.)

Are you fed up with the excuses

Ted Cruz has got your back

Standing for America, marriage and super PACs

No, this is not "The World is Yours" by Nas. And, yes, the image of a dude with a President Obama mask dancing like Michael Jackson might offend some folks. But, remember that "Time for Truth" shouldn't be compared to all songs ever. It should be compared to the wasteland that is politically themed songs.

And, by that measure, I think it is one of the good ones. Come at me.

What impresses me most about this grassroots video is that it appeaars to be the work of some very young people. Maybe we can keep this republic after all, Mr. Franklin.
