Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton get all the headlines. Marco Rubio and Bernie Sanders get all the buzz. But Ted Cruz is running the best campaign of the any of the 19 people seeking the presidency.
This fact might shock you. The senator from Texas is, after all, one of the least-liked members of Congress. He's hated by Democrats as a rank ideologue interested only in furthering his own political ambitions. And, he's hated by Republicans as a rank ideologue interested only in furthering his own political ambitions. Cruz has become, for both parties' establishments, the living, breathing symbol of everything that's wrong with Washington.
That image, of course, works to Cruz's great advantage with a Republican presidential primary electorate that loathes the nation's capital and everyone who makes their living there. (You might note, gentle reader, that Cruz would be included among those who make their living in D.C. No one ever accused voters of being entirely consistent.)
Cruz has done a lot right in this race. Consider:
1. He was the first candidate into the race -- he announced on March 23 -- and, by going first, won weeks worth of positive publicity when no one else was in the mix.
2. He announced at Liberty University, making clear to every Republican voter that he wouldn't shy away from identifying as a proud social conservative.
3. His message is pitch-perfect. No one, not even Trump, in the GOP field can deliver the Washington-is-broken-and-they-don't even-get-it message better than Cruz. Trump's problem is that he veers WAY off message every few minutes. Cruz is much more disciplined, finding ways to bring virtually any question he is asked back to how terrible the "Washington Cartel" is. Cruz has one other thing that Trump lacks: A track record of....

Ultimately, they will all get by their biases and/agendas, and see the strength of the Cruz Campaign.
Nothing would please me more than to see Cruz’s numbers up at Trump levels, surpassing that stealth GOPe candidate aka Ben Carson.
I could go for that. I just don’t get the Carson support.
He must be seen as a threat or the flying monkeys wouldn’t expend so much energy attacking him.
I like Cruz but the one who is running the best campaign is the one who is leading.
In before the Cruz = Jimmy Carter Christian haters.
no, the object of the game is not to lead before it officially starts...the object of the game is to win eventually. That may or may not be who is leading at any given time during the game.
Yeah. Kinda like mediocre students boasting about how great their school is.....
Such venom coming from one of the ideological hack editors at WaPo, means Cruz is definitely pressing the right buttons.
I like Cruz too but if he’s running the best campaign it does beg the question why is he polling so poorly?
Rick Santorum went into the Iowa caucus in 4th place and left with a win.
Polls are for suckers.
Uhm, If you're leading, it's already started.
You asked a rational question.
Fair question... as long as when his poll numbers continue to go up, the same “question” concludes his campaign is improving.
“a rank ideologue interested only in furthering his own political ambitions”
He must be talking ‘bout Obama, right?
No, but delusional folks think it has. We're in the preseason.....it starts in Iowa. Until then, the official scoreboard is zero to zero to zero across the board. Amazing you would try and refute logic with delusion.
It doesn’t beg the question, it answered the question. Then again, I guess reading the article is out of the question nowadays at FR.
Carson says a lot of things that connect with social conservatives. Many, and I know some, don’t dig deeper (unfortunately).
You’re delusional if you think sports and politics are perfect analogs.
You just keep comforting yourself though....
If “best campaign” means the most snail mailings and most fundraising calls, the yes, Cruz’s campaign is definitely the best.
