Meet Rafael Cruz: Ted Cruz’s secret evangelical weapon

WASHINGTON, Iowa — The chapel doors were firmly closed, but the shouts could be heard on the empty streets outside Marion Avenue Baptist Church here on a recent Sunday evening. “Amen!” someone cried out. “Tell it!” another yelled.

Inside, practically every pew was filled. A few hundred people were there — many of them visitors from nearby towns in this heavily rural part of the state. They sat in rapt attention as a man in a dark suit dramatically paced back and forth in front of the pulpit, speaking with the passionate air of someone determined to save every last sinner from the fiery pits of hell.

“We as a church need to get on our faces before God in repentance,” the man declared, jabbing his finger in the air. “It’s our fault what’s happening in our nation, because we have failed to assume our responsibility.… We have been hiding under the pew. We have believed that the Bible and politics are two things that should not be mixed.”

Grabbing his well-worn Bible, the man thrust it in the air. “Let me tell you,” he said, “this book talks a lot about politics.”

“Yes!” someone called out.

It wasn’t the church’s pastor who was firing up the faithful that night on Marion Avenue. The speaker was Rafael Cruz, the 76-year-old father of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. A Cuban immigrant turned traveling minister, the elder Cruz has been a central figure in his son’s rise on the national political scene. His personal story of religious rebirth and pursuit of the American dream has been the emotional and inspirational backbone of Ted Cruz’s bid for the Republican presidential nomination. And it’s made Rafael Cruz a rock star in his own right among many religious conservatives, who are vital to his son’s...

He certainly had a profound effect on several of my neighbors who went to see him speak earlier this summer.

As one neighbor put it, “Any man raised by Rafael Cruz is sure to be a good man worth voting for”.

He certainly had a great effect on me. I agree with your neighbors despite Cruz being considered a Jimmy Carter clone. Seems there are Christian haters everywhere now days even on FR.

Here is a link to his speech he gave at my church last year:

Rafael Cruz - Reclaiming America

I am going to make some people mad now, but I tell you Cruz is smart enough not to become unequally yoked. So I see no way some FReepers dream ticket will happen.

When Rafael was 17, an informant turned him in. He was arrested and taken to jail, where forces loyal to Batista held him for several days and tortured him. Soldiers broke his nose and bashed his front teeth in — “until they dangled from his mouth,” according to his son’s book. (Cruz’s memories of what happened in Cuba are hard to confirm. The Cuban government has not commented on his account.)

LOL, liberal press for you!

So Rafael came to America to escape Batista? Does that mean he was a rebel supporting Castro and Communism?

Need some details..

Bautista was also a dictator who tortured and imprisoned his political opposition, which is what made the Communist revolution in Cuba possible in the first place. So because someone wanted to escape Bautista does not mean he supported Castro...

So Rafael came to America to escape Batista? Does that mean he was a rebel supporting Castro and Communism?

From the article:

According to Ted Cruz’s book, “A Time for Truth,” which features a chapter on his dad’s early life, his father did not know Castro was a communist — he was just “an inspiring figure to Cuba’s restive youth.” Young Rafael “became a guerrilla, throwing Molotov cocktails at the buildings of Batista’s regime, whatever the resistance needed,” Cruz wrote.

...

Though he was no longer in Cuba, Cruz still supported Castro’s cause, and when his English became good enough, he began giving speeches around Austin advocating for the revolution. In 1959, Castro succeeded, and that summer, Cruz went back to see his family. While there, he became disillusioned with the new regime.

“That same man that had been talking before about hope and change was now talking about how the rich were evil, how they oppress the poor and about the need to redistribute the wealth,” Rafael Cruz told a crowd in Iowa in 2013, offering one of his many comparisons between the Cuban dictator and Obama.

Why was he tortured by Bautista?

If Castro came to power in 1959, he had not had time to implement policies. More details if you have them please.

There is something incongruent about Ted Cruz and his Constitutionalist face and his corporatist face and his big corporate donors.

Think Americans see it.

You have a different agenda, haven't you? Go and do the research yourself. I'm not going to participate with you in destroying the Cruz family's good name.

I have only the agenda of ferreting out the truth. You should want the same.

We have been lied to and suffered a coup in this country. Not again.

Let us not fight each other with accusations, but keep getting out facts. If you do not want to cooperate say so.

You can read it yourself by clicking the link to the article. If that is not enough, read Ted Cruz's book, A Time for Truth. Or you can get his father's book, A Time for Actions, which will be released in December (according to the article). Moreover, you can talk to the Castro Brothers.

There is something incongruent about Ted Cruz and his Constitutionalist face and his corporatist face and his big corporate donors.

By the way, this is not a good way to start a conversation. It seems to me that you've already made up your mind that Ted Cruz and his father are frauds, and you are digging dirt to support your decision.

Perhaps it is better not to make assumptions.

I have not made up my mind about Cruz’s motives , but I am super concerned about his donors, his support for more legal foreign workers and his support for trade deals that harm American workers.

Cannot support those positions and can’t understand why he does.

I'll post the links only for people who still want to know the facts.

H1B Visa:

Do you know the story behind the H1B visa stuff?

It was in the middle of a battle which Ted Cruz and a few senators fought against the 'Gang of 8' amnesty bill. He offered an amendment to counteract pro-illegal immigration provisions of the amnesty bill.

I, and many people, are grateful that Ted Cruz led this fight. Otherwise, they would have approved amnesty already.

Thank you. I appreciate yor effort.

I disagree with Cruz and his rationale for increasing H1b visas. The abuse of those visas, the length of them, the easy renewal and the fact American Stem graduates are being ignored in favor of visa holders just cannot allow for increases.

I appaud his victory in SCOTUS. But that was his job and he is brilliant enoug lawyer to have won for the other side had he been asked
