Susan J. Demas: Why is the Drudge Report weirdly obsessed with Clinton's health?

We need to talk about Drudge.

That's Matt Drudge, the king of conservative media, whose old-school site has 2 million daily unique visitors and roughly 700 million monthly page views.

When I first became a reporter (waaay back in the early aughts), I was shocked how many newsrooms — whose editors worshiped at the altar of objectivity — relied on the Drudge Report for story ideas.

To the site's credit, there was no equivalent at that time on the left. There were plenty of liberal publications like Mother Jones and The Nation, but they offered long, nuanced takes on important matters like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — not quick links to irresistible (and often fun) stories of the day.

And after years of conservatives whining about "liberal bias," Drudge offered an easy "correction" to that for newsrooms.

The Drudge Report is crack for political reporters, which is why there's muted criticism, even when the site peddles false stories. Just one link to your story and you're guaranteed gangbusters traffic. Your editor will love you and you might garner some instant (Internet) fame.

Nowadays, the best way to achieve that is with an anti-Hillary Clinton piece — even one with a headline-friendly quote against the Democratic front-runner will do.

The site has become particularly concerned about Clinton's health (before her birthday, the site's front page splash thoughtfully featured a small cake overrun with 68 candles).

I agree she’s trying to grab on to Drudge’s fame, for her 15 minutes of it.

Won’t happen.

She’ll be long forgotten while Drudge carries on with his 1,000 or more hits a day just from within the White House. She’ll be lucky to get a thousand over her pitiful (joke of a) journalistic lifetime.

Read her bio in her Michigan blog-rag. You’d think she’s world famous. Never heard of her until today.

She likes using profanity on her Facebook timeline — a real mark of a professional — NOT.

“I agree something is not quite right about Hillary, besides her liberal radical Alinsky politics.”

All leftist thought, from the limousine liberalism of a George Clooney to the murderous horrors of Mao, Stalin, and Pol Pot, is of and from Satan. Leftism is a contaminant in the human cognosphere, not a natural component of it.

Satan is smarter than we are, and he never sleeps. Those over whom he has the most influence are like maniacally evil energizer demons.

You can’t spend as many decades festering in the Earl of Hell’s weskit pocket as the Hildebeest has without taking some damage.

Is Demas a lazy pronunciation for “dumb ass”?
