Donald Trump to rivals: Give up your super PACs

Real-estate mogul Donald Trump released a statement on Friday calling on every presidential candidate to drop their so-called super PACs.

"I have disavowed all Super PAC's, requested the return of all donations made to said PAC's, and I am calling on all Presidential candidates to do the same," Trump said.

Super PACs, which can raise and spend unlimited funds, are required to be independent of the campaigns they support, though some candidates blur the lines more than others.

Trump's statement came one day after Politico reported that the main super PAC backing his campaign, Make America Great Again PAC, was closing shop.

The PAC said it decided to shutter because Trump indicated that he didn't want a super PAC, but the decision followed increasing media scrutiny on the connections between Trump's campaign and the supposedly independent operation.

Wait, are Trumpsters against Citizens United now?

Hey, maybe Trump can make a new push for McCain/Feingold campaign finance reform. Has that become the new conservative goodness?

He can ask, but in principle the PACs are supposed to be issues oriented, not candidate oriented, so asking somebody to “drop their PAC” doesn’t make sense, and also muzzles free speech on the part of the PAC.

Well for heaven's sake, all the other candidates ‘money bags’ are whining and howling to beat the band that Trump is that and Trump is that...Little Jebbi=Trump called my brother out; Rand Paul=Trump doesn't know anything, guess because Paul is a Representative he knows everything? Well, for goodness sake why isn't he in there fighting for the Speaker's seat if he's so good at everything; Carly's face=Trump hurt my feelings (cry baby); Linda Graham=Trump gave out my phone number, and McCain wasn't here to protect me (waa waa)....

So now you see what is being said, course you probably don't want to hear it, you being so nice and all, but people on here have a lot of opinions, and you don't like some, and I don't like some, but I'm still going to say them....

“The character of our country is only as strong as our leaders-—the only special interest I am beholden to is the American people and together we will Make America Great Again!” Trump declared.

By definition, they cannot legally give up their “super pacs,” they do not belong to the candidates. Get informed, Donald.

The man is willing to walk the walk. And, BTW, Trump did not inherit that much money from his DAD — HE EARNED IT!

Ok, ‘folks’ who is next to give it up? A little arm twisting?

Er, Trump has only used $1.5 of his money. Even including contributions, he has run a campaign that leads in all national polls on a tiny fraction of what the others have spent.

They could still raise money for their campaign, as much as they want to.

Bloomberg.com/politics has a story with what we think are some significant facts about the presidential election so far.

They report:

The top six Republican presidential campaign advertisers, all independent political action committees that can raise and spend unlimited sums of money, have little to show for what they’ve shelled out so far. After at least $18.5 million in television commercials, the candidates they’re backing are among those doing the worst in the polls.

Those findings, from a Bloomberg Politics analysis of broadcast advertising data, raise questions about the return on investment so far for the mega-donors mostly responsible for super-PAC financing, while also suggesting that long-held truisms of campaigning might be weakening in the face of new technology.

Donald Trump, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina, three candidates who have led in the polls in recent weeks despite never having held elective office, haven’t had super-PAC support on TV. Among the three, Carson is the only one to have run his own campaign ads, and at significantly lower levels than the super-PACs.

We’re not going to be running ads. I can tell you that,” Fiorina said Friday in Iowa, the state that hosts the first nomination voting. “We’re going to be shaking hands and meeting voters.”

The ability to advertise in multiple states at once has traditionally been viewed as a sign of political strength in presidential campaigns. In this election season, at least so far, it seems a sign of weakness.

“Often you spend money when you are in trouble,” said Ken Goldstein, a University of San Francisco professor and polling and advertising analyst for Bloomberg Politics. “In this campaign, that’s proving especially true.”

Commentary

This is important. Very important. It is not only important in terms of who may win the Republican Primary (more so than who wins the Democrat Primary) but it is important in what it says about how the political sands have shifted. We sense people don’t put as much stock in political advertising as they did before they could learn what they want to know in the internet.

PAC may not only not be as important as they were in the past, but the smart candidates may be more successful in creating a popular backlash against PAC’s trying to con the races.

BTW, Super Pacs aren't for the candidate to give up. They are independent.

Oh sure, the party insiders, influence peddlers and DC well connected don't infect and run these political PAC's! Right! Why these political PAC's are independent folks with any corrupt special interest's. Good grief!

Tokyo Rose would be proud!
