The Warsaw uprising is what you refer to.
They thought the Russians were going to liberate them soon so they took up arms against the German occupiers. Instead, the Russians simply stopped their advance long enough for the Germans to suppress the uprising.
In an interesting twist, the German military treated the Jews participating in the uprising as POWs, a sign of respect.
