I asked that very question to a pro gun British friend who had recently moved to Florida. His theory was that most of the real men were killed off during all the wars leaving mostly the wusses to procreate.

That's a bt of a myth. Private handgun ownership was never widespread in Britain, for all sorts of historical and cultural reasons. The only classes of guns widely owned were shotguns and hunting rifles held for two purposes: sport and vermin control. They remain so to this day, since they were never banned. I fact the number of legally owned guns of all kinds is higher today than it was before the 1997 handgun ban.
