Those Assimilating Immigrants: A new study finds they commit less crime and they learn English.
Wall Street Journal ^ | 10/08/2015

Sorry to break the good news to some of our conservative friends, but it turns out that most immigrants to America are assimilating as their forebears did. That’s the gist of a new 400-page report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, which looks at everything from English proficiency, education levels and family structure to health, crime and employment.

Here’s the money sentence: “Across all measurable outcomes, integration increases over time, with immigrants becoming more like the native-born with more time in the country, and with the second and third generations becoming more like other native-born Americans than their parents were.”

Across all measurable outcomes. That bears repeating, especially when so many are painting immigrants who come here to work as criminals or welfare mooches. To take one example, the Donald Trump brain trust at the Center for Immigration Studies recently found “significantly higher welfare use associated with immigrants.”

But even CIS admits they didn’t measure individuals. To get to the headline-grabbing result, CIS had to measure households. Given that immigrant households are typically larger than those of native-born Americans, simple arithmetic means that the more people you have in a home, the more likely one of these people will receive some sort of government benefit.

This kind of political spin makes the National Academies report so welcome. Their scope was large. The panel notes that if you add up immigrants here legally and illegally, and then throw in the children of both groups, it works out to about 78.1 million people. That’s one of four members of the U.S. population, so it’s important to know how well they are integrating.

The report finds that roughly 85% of America’s foreign-born population speak a language other than English at home. For most of these, that language is Spanish. But that’s not the whole story. English-language proficiency, it says, may be happening even “faster now” than it did for earlier waves of mainly European immigrants. Today many people arriving already speak English, and second and third generations grow in proficiency.

In this case I'll shoot the messenger.

The WSJ isn't exactly credible on the matter of illegal immigrants.

I’m in the minority here but I don’t have a problem with our immigrants because a majority of them are from Latin AMERICA and immigrants tend to be Catholic.

Sorry, but until the study is limited to illegals it is worthless. Just take a look at the local police blotter or the list of inmates in your county jail and you see clearly who is committing crime.

Interesting since every time I overhear Mexicans speaking (I live in Chula Vista near San Diego), it's Spanish I hear. If they know English they sure don't speak it among themselves. Also, speak to these same people in English and, more often than not, they don't understand it.

RE: From my first hand accounts, I call BS!

The problem with the Wall Street Journal *(and “conservatives” like Linda Chavez and Michael Medved ) is their equivocation when they use the term “immigrants”.

Most conservatives I know are NOT against legal immigration but ILLEGAL immigration.

This article does little to clarify the difference.

Legal ones maybe.

My great grandfather fell in with the Purple gang during prohibition.

Has anyone explain why we need millions of uneducated & fertile immigrants in a country with a declining need for labor?

It is meant not to provide the clarity you speak of as a surprising amount of the “Media” chokes when it has to really tell the truth without comparing or equivocating over “jots and tittles”

Really sound methodology here, eh? Most of the waves of immigrants who came over here after World War II had lots of children and most of them would still be living and included in this group. Many of them would be about my age. And, yes, they integrated very well because I grew up with a substantial number of them and still know some personally.

I cannot think of a single one of them who expected Americans to learn their language, demand a cornucopia of government services and cater to them as a favored minority group. There is a night and day difference between them and the current crop.

This is such BS!

I live in a state with the highest per capita illegals and no one from this organization went door to door “researching” here.

Um, I’m conservative and I have a big problem with legal immigration too. YUUUGE even.

I think I’m going to stop calling myself conservative at this point and use the truth: I’m an American.

I have a sneaky feeling the Academy that did the “study” received a grant to do it, and knew what sort of finding the donor desired.

It’s exactly like the AGW farce. The entities providing the funding are doing it to get a result favorable to their ends; and the debauched pseudo scientists doing the study KNOW what’s expected. Why else would they cook some of the data and discard others?

Now a scientist in Australia has deconstructed the computer code being used in climate change forecasting models, and found that the number for carbon dioxide programmed into the computer code is 10 times what actually exists in the real world.

That story has been posted on FR for nearly a week now.
