White House announces new effort to fight chronic absenteeism in schools

The Obama administration on Wednesday announced that it will begin publishing data on chronic absenteeism rates at schools nationwide, part of a campaign meant to highlight and address the problem of poor attendance.

A growing body of research has shown that children who miss more than 10 percent of the school year — about 18 days in most districts — are more likely to struggle academically and drop out. An estimated 5 million to 7.5 million children are chronically absent each year, but many school districts and reform strategies have failed to tackle the problem head on.

Now, the White House wants to help change that with the “Every Student, Every Day” campaign to help districts identify which children are missing school too often and figure out what kind of help those children need in order to get to class.

Remember when we had TRUANCY OFFICERS ?

Remember when kids had parents who tanned their hineys for skipping school ?

Remember when we had things like ‘laws’ and ‘justice’ ?

What percent of these kids have a dad...?

I know that’s rhetorical...

I know my kids had to be either dead or in the hospital to miss school...

No different than for illegal immigrants — just enforce existing truancy laws.

He could add permanent loss of welfare benefits. That would work.

Maybe not...but if they still did, we probably wouldn’t need another battalion of federal bean-counters to tell us how many children aren’t in school, and why they aren’t.

“Every Student, Every Day”

Using Common Core math, that translates to - 'miss more than 10 percent of the school year'.

The JOKES just keep writing themselves.

The government can;t fix anything. That's been PROVEN over and over.

The Government would screw up a free lunch at a Sunday school picnic.

I was in middle school in the mid 1940s.

I was a severe asthmatic and missed 80 days of school in the 8th grade.

My friend brought the homework assignment home to me,I had all of the books, and with my mother’s help I did quite well and went on to 9th grade.

Education was important in my house-—as was self discipline.

(By the way,I had no Dad-—he had died 8 years earlier.)

Listen up, those pollyannish, pie in the sky ideals that made this country great are long gone and they aint coming back. Just because I live in Leave it to Beaver World, doesn’t mean we all can. but I have permission from Barbara Mortenson herself, knew her for over 30 years.

“Great teachers matter, great principals matter, but they can’t work their magic if our babies aren’t in school,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

OMG! Doesn't he know a white man never, ever is to say anything matters except black lives?

Public school does not call you when your child misses school. My Friends daughter missed a month and she only found out when she left work early and found her in bed with some guy-talking Highschool here. It’s so easy, just call the parents.I am watching a 4 year going to Catholic Pre K 3.He missed one day of school because the parents were told to keep him home.Stomach problems. He went to school the next day and the teacher requested a note.
