Historic Pacific trade deal faces skeptics in U.S. Congress

welve Pacific Rim countries on Monday reached the most ambitious trade pact in a generation, aiming to liberalize commerce in 40 percent of the world's economy in a deal that faces skepticism from U.S. lawmakers.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) pact struck in Atlanta after marathon talks could reshape industries, change the cost of products from cheese to cancer treatments and have repercussions for drug companies and automakers.

Tired negotiators worked round the clock over the weekend to settle tough issues such as monopoly rights for new biotech drugs. New Zealand's demand for greater access for its dairy exports was only settled at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 GMT) on Monday.

If approved, the pact would cut trade barriers and set common standards from Vietnam to Canada. It would also furnish a legacy-shaping victory for U.S. President Barack Obama, who will promote the agreement on Tuesday in remarks to business leaders in Washington.

From poster’s home page cheerfully citing economic data up to 2004:

“I thought I’d clue in the doom’n’gloomers as to where they were going wrong. I put up an about page that showed why the economy was actually in pretty darn good shape and showed why better times were ahead.” <- tell that to all of us who are carrying the record load of 90+ Million working age people who are not participating in the work force.

Secret trade agreements made with second with world countries are bound to improve the US standard of living and our future. Just like NAFTA / WTO has.

I’m confused. Doesn’t TPP need 60 votes to pass? Wasn’t the TPA only the entry point into these other trade agreements, which is why Cruz voted for it?

TPA allows for the up or down vote of trade bills and no amendments for six years. TPP falls into that window, so no need of 60 for the pass, only a majority.

Mariner provided status details and feared outcome, correctly:

“After the show trial, the US Congress will pass this.

After all, they had their mind made up when they passed TPA, which ascertains TPP passage unless blocked by 60 votes in the US Senate.

Yes, China will join later:”Trade ministers said the TPP would in future be open to other countries, including potentially China.”

Good job there GOPe (inclusive of EVERY Senator who voted for TPA).

many people are going to lose their jobs in many countries.

That’s the goal I thought? How are we ever going to Cement our place at the Table of Power if the peasants Don’t Need us for their very survival? We have to make as many people poor, desperate, destitute, enslaved and begging Government for their very subsistence. Which we will gladly supply and they will continue to Vote for us out of basic survival. ANd we will Control the World. Got it!

It ends national sovereignty. All major decisions will be decided by corporate stacked councils. Other than that, nothing.

It’s essentially Marxism. These people are only going to be happy when they end poverty. They aim to end poverty in the Marxist fashion, by bringing as many people down to poverty level so they can all share in the misery.

Actually I don’t pay attention to it anymore. I already know the outcome so why bother.
