Jeb Bush Charged Parents' Church $50,000 For Speech; Houston Church Paid More Than Most Corporations

After leaving the Florida governorship, Jeb Bush often commanded tens of thousands of dollars for speaking engagements. Some of his bigger checks were signed by major corporations, private universities with considerable endowments, overseas business conferences -- and a church in Houston frequented for more than 50 years by his parents, former U.S. President George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush.

The former Florida governor charged one of his highest fees to St. Martin's Episcopal Church last year for a Sept. 30 event, according to a financial disclosure form with the Federal Election Commission. The fee of $50,000 was his fifth-highest rate in 2014 of 43 events stateside.

Those who received a better deal than Bush's family church included FedEx, which made more than $9 billion during the 2014 fiscal year and paid Bush $28,000 for his January speech, Vanderbilt University, which has a $4 billion endowment and wrote him a check for $45,000 in October, and electrical contractor Altec Industries, which paid Bush $25,000 -- half of the St. Martin's invoice.

Bush's usual rate seems to be $42,500, which the Distinguished Speaker Series of Southern California, Hanover Insurance Group and professional service giant KPMG all paid, among about a dozen others.

The Bush family has been affiliated with St. Martin's Episcopal since Jeb's parents moved to Houston in 1959

It’s the humidity that would get to many of us. Access to Corpus Christi and the Padre Islands would be nice, though. If we ever moved back to Texas we’d probably look more at San Antonio. And have to comment that the Money Laundering point in post #9 is spot on. I wish someone in the media was smart enough to bring up the idea in a broader venue as it relates to ALL the candidates and their speaking fees, including and most especially Hillary.

>> cows and horses and still drive in for work

It’s mighty helpful to carpool though, if you don’t want to leave for work at 5AM and wait in traffic. I guess that’s one reason you have the cows and horses... one in front, two in back. :-)

Does Trump charge to give speeches? If he does what does he charge? Does he do so to charitable and religious organizations?

St. Martin's does not appear to have advertised Bush's visit. Although the church frequently promotes its speaker series events, there is no mention of him or a Sept. 30 event on its website or Facebook page. The church has more than 8,400 congregants, but there seems to be no trace on social media of a Bush speech or appearance.

I would want to know who provided the $50k to the church to give to Jeb.

Sneaky way for Mom and Pop to finance Jeb and get a charitable tax deduction at the same time. Political contributions are not tax deductible. Church contributions are.

(A search for Bush's name on Twitter in the dates from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 doesn't surface any posts that indicate he was at the church in person or delivered a speech via Skype or video.)

He takes $50K from church for a speech and the church doesn't even promote the event? No one mentions it on Twitter? This is just odd.

It is not so bad leaving for work at 6am. Not much waiting at that time but you better be prepared to move. Until the highways load up, they move and move fast. I've always preferred starting early and hoping to leave early. I've never had a job with a dependable schedule that made a carpool an option.

More questions.

If his last name was Branch and he was a former Florida governor would he still command $43,000 per speech?

Why is he worth anything more than a free meal for the benefit of speaking?

Is he that inspiring? What does he say?

‘In order to become a success, I advise you to be born into a long time political family. Use that political clout to become a successful real estate developer utilizing inside information and political contacts to become wealthy enough to exploit your name recognition, family fortune and political clout to be elected governor of a swing state even though you never held elected office in the past.’

Good advice, but can the average person replicate that success?

This is sort-of like the multi million dollar donation to the Clinton Foundation from the Baptist Church in Cameroon here awhile back.

I wish I could remember the details. My first thought was, and where did they get the money from that they donated, and I wonder how much was their cut.

Taking that $50k had to be an act of love. He loves that easy money.

It looks like Bush pocketed the $50k and didn’t even give a speech to the church.

My dad got up every morning and put on a long sleeve white dress shirt, a suit and a tie and went to work. No air in the home or at work. He tried to get the company to agree to short sleeve shirts but they would not. It was just the way it was. So who was I to complain. You just got used to it.

I imagine you would have to, but I can not stand the heat. Every time I am in Houston it seems to be 99 deg with 99% humidity. Just too darn hot.

I do like the fact that at 67 I tolerate heat quite well. I can wrap up against the cold but heat has to be tolerated. I don’t want to have to stay in-doors in the summer to be comfortable. I read somewhere that kids who grew up in just air conditioning don’t tolerate heat.
