City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, who chairs the Transportation Committee, wants to curb car ownership in the city to 1 million people and families by 2030, from the 1.4 million vehicle owners in New York.
And he wants to test drive the idea with a car-free Earth Day next year.
This is one of the most inefficient means of travel available to New Yorkers, yet many in our outer boroughs are forced to rely upon it due to a lack of options, Rodriguez (D-Manhattan) said at a talk at NYU Rudin Center for Transportation on Monday.
Rodriguez, who owns a car, said he understands the burden of having a vehicle in New York. His call for fewer vehicles and a car-free public awareness campaign for Earth Day on April 22 were part of a report on ways to expand travel options in the citys transit deserts.

AAA spokesman Robert Sinclair said cars are no longer a must-have among younger New Yorkers, citing better transit, expenses and the environment. Without a doubt, it is a trend in general that has taken hold in our country, Sinclair said.

Steal YR’s car.
Problem solved.
I live in the Bronx and need my car to commute to work, go food shopping, go out on weekends. I will get rid of my car in NYC when required to. BUT, I will be driving it out of this dying city on a one way trip to Florida/Texas probably. I’m getting fed up. If it wasn’t for family connections, I would be loooong gone by now.
So why not eliminate anything that runs with a motor or uses fuel and limit it to foot or bicycle - including all politicians. And they could announce that there will be no motorized snow plows in the winter. Sounds like the railing we hear against guns from politicians while they are surrounded by armed security guards.
Wow!
I feel for you! Had no idea any conservatives were left in the Bronx.
This country would be better off if people celebrated
“Private Property Rights Day” and “Liberty and Freedom Day,”
instead of Earth Day.
Lol. Not many! At least not in the city. Yeah. I think my days are numbered here. Only so much you can take.
I miss the Drive-In Movie Theaters in my area.
Here’s all you need to know about Rodriguez:
Born: June 18, 1965 (age 50), Santiago, Chile
Isn’t this “diversity” great.
I don’t blame you one bit. Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas even in the SE is still better than the lib hell-holes up there.
We like productive and like-minded people down South, although we have a fair share of welfare rats burning through our hard-earned “tax dollars” as well.
“Rodriguez, who owns a car”
Hey, here’s an idea: Rod and all his family should sell their cars and go completely carless for a year, and then he can get back to us and let us know how it worked out.
Since when did politicians in New York or any other major city consider the economy when instituting their ridiculous edicts?
Escape From New York: It’s not just a movie, its a necessity!
In the article, I noticed this phrase: "...to expand travel options in the citys 'transit deserts.'" This usage of "desert" (as in "food desert") can be a helpful warning sign of officials like these.
He will, of course, continue to ride around in his chauffeur-driven limo.
Yeah, and have to rely on the absolutely abominable public transportation in NYC? If you want to be late to work, classes, anything—take the Metropolitian Transit Authority buses or subways. Especially the buses. You could be standing during rush hour at a bus stop and still have to wait 30 minutes for a bus. Even if the posted schedule (what a joke!) says they come every 7 minutes.
