I am about as much of a war hawk as you can be. I am a cold-war era vet and dislike the Sov, er, Russians. But I want the US out the area and the Syrian government and their Russian patrons allowed to destroy ISIS, and the rebels. If anything we should be offering the Russians help...

It should read “Having RE-established a base on the Syrian coast”
Russia, in its many forms have always pushed to have a warm water port in the Med. They had a base, or basing agreement, with Syria since the mid-1970s. So Putin’s actions in the region is nothing new and should have been part of the baseline considerations when dealing with Syria.
Whenever I see a picture with Putin and 0bama, the expression on Putin’s face is usually some variation of “you have GOT to be freaking kidding me”.
Kind of reminds me of the expression on Cheney’s face (from 2009?) in that famous picture where he’s shaking 0bama’s hand.
I don’t like the Russians, the Syrians, Iran or ISIS; they’re all enemies. We should just let them slug it out and watch the show.
It’s my understanding the S-300 has been deployed around their Syrian bases. Therefore low survivability for any conventional fighters going against them. May even be effective against stealthy assets, since it can successfully engage cruise missiles.
