Statement by the North Atlantic Council on incursions into Turkey’s airspace by Russian aircraft
NATO ^ | Last updated: 05 Oct. 2015 17:23 | NATO

The North Atlantic Council met today to hold consultations on the potential implications of the recent dangerous military actions of the Russian Federation in and around Syria.

Allies expressed their deep concern with regard to the Russian military build-up in Syria and especially the attacks by the Russian Air Force on Hama, Homs, and Idlib which led to civilian casualties and did not target Da’esh. Allies call on the Russian Federation to immediately cease its attacks on the Syrian opposition and civilians, to focus its efforts on fighting ISIL, and to promote a solution to the conflict through a political transition.

Russian military actions have reached a more dangerous level with the recent violations of Turkish airspace on 3 October and 4 October by Russian Air Force SU-30 and SU-24 aircraft in the Hatay region. The aircraft in question entered Turkish airspace despite Turkish authorities’ clear, timely and repeated warnings. In accordance with NATO practice, Turkish fighter aircraft responded to these incursions by closing to identify the intruder, after which the Russian planes departed Turkish airspace.

Allies strongly protest these violations of Turkish sovereign airspace, and condemn these incursions into and violations of NATO airspace. Allies also note the extreme danger of such irresponsible behaviour. They call on the Russian Federation to cease and desist, and immediately explain these violations.

Allies call on the Russian side to take all necessary measures to ensure that such violations do not take place in the future.

The security of the Alliance is indivisible, and Allies stand in strong solidarity with Turkey. We will continue to follow the developments on the South-Eastern borders of NATO very closely.

“I tend to side against people that behead Americans on Youtube.”

“I guess I’m just silly like that.”

TYou fail to grasp it is not an either/or situation, and that Putin and Russia are using the Caliphate and Syria as opportunities to cause more mischief. The Caliphate must be eliminated, but that does not give Russia a free hand to manipulate public opinion to also attack the enemies of the Caliphate while trying to play innocent.

It looks like Russia’s hands are quite free to do as they please. I see nothing happening so far worthy of the American lives it would take to restrain them.

Russians will succeed where we failed. They are not concerned about Collateral Damage or charges of Human Rights violations. They operate under the old adage that “The Victor is Never Asked Who was Right or Wrong in the Beginning or Who told the Truth”. Overwhelming force always prevails.

Here’s a plan.
Russia stays out of Turkish airspace and Turkey stays out of Syrian airspace.

Which enemies of the Caliphate are they attacking?

The Free Syrian Army? When did they start fighting against ISIS, and are they really against a Caliphate or just looking to be the ones in charge?

Is Russia attacking the Kurds? If that is happening I haven’t heard about it. The Kurds might be worth standing up for.

“Me think NATO/Turkey dost protesteth too mucheth.”

That is to be expected from a Russian sympathizer and/or troll.

It really is pathetic, isn’t it. Cheering on fascist Russia on a conservative website American website no matter how outrageous the Russian behavior is.

Oblivious not silly. You seem unaware you are siding with American hostage holding Iran and their BFF ally fascist Russia. Birds of a feather, flock together....

What cheering? What is NATO's response to Turkey violating Greece's airspace? If not on the same scale then it's just NATO pretending they are angry for diplomatic points/sabre rattling.

I don't want a war over what Russia did in Turkey when Turkey does it all the time themselves.

I am sick of people acting like the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania are America’s long lost allies. These nations provided Hitler’s best Jew killing units along with most of those other ex-Axis allied nations you mentioned.

It this the same Turkey and NATO that flies into Syria and drops bombs -every day- without permission or a UN authorization?
Is this the same Turkey that when they had an RF-4 shot down for crossing into Syria for 5 minutes, Turkish president Abdullah Gül said that “it is routine for jet fighters to sometimes fly in and out over national borders”?
THAT Turkey?

Anyway, the Russians are bombing rebels. The Turkeys should thank them and offer any assistance they can.

Until Turkey stops assisting in the Islamic take over of Europe I hope they get violated in every possible manner.

And anyone remember loyal ally Turkey denying us entry into northern Iraq? Anyone remember Turkey launching flotillas against Israel?
Turkey only made sense as a NATO member in the Cold War era.
Now they are nothing but a friction point, pushing the islamist BS position.

What’s really outrageous is pond scum such as yourself siding with Obama on Foreign policy. Why don’t you leave this CONSERVATIVE website. We conservatives will side with anyone who fights and kills the Muslim menace.

I agree that both are inimical. However, NATO is choosing to act on Turkey's side and that is the side of ISIS and the Jihadis. IMO opinion, we should choose neither side, but if we are forced to choose it should not be the side of ISIS and Turkey.

How many Christians and Muslims have to die at the hands of ISIS and the Jihadis before you declare them a primary enemy?
