~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Washington Navy Yard, Washington D. C.

The Washington Navy Yard (WNY) is the former shipyard and ordnance plant of the United States Navy in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is the oldest shore establishment of the U.S. Navy.

The Yard currently serves as a ceremonial and administrative center for the U.S. Navy, home to the Chief of Naval Operations, and is headquarters for the Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Historical Center, the Department of Naval History, the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps, Naval Reactors, Marine Corps Institute, the United States Navy Band, and other more classified facilities.

The Washington Navy Yard was the scene of many scientific developments. Robert Fulton conducted research and testing on his clockwork torpedo during the War of 1812. In 1822, Commodore John Rodgers built the country's first marine railway for the overhaul of large vessels.

John A. Dahlgren developed his distinctive bottle-shaped cannon that became the mainstay of naval ordnance before the Civil War. In 1898, David W. Taylor developed a ship model testing basin, which was used by the Navy and private shipbuilders to test the effect of water on new hull designs.

The first shipboard aircraft catapult was tested in the Anacostia River in 1912, and a wind tunnel was completed at the Yard in 1916. The giant gears for the Panama Canal locks were cast at the Yard. Navy Yard technicians applied their efforts to medical designs for prosthetic hands and molds for artificial eyes and teeth.

Good evening, Pro...((HUGS))...now a few days off, right?

Do you have your regular customers? Ones that wait for you? Little old ladies that think you are charming?

I'm working only Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays now.

Of course the little old ladies think I'm charming :-)

A lot of Vets come in too and active Army in uniform. I high-five them all! It's a sweet gig.

Tuesday morning coffee bump.

Bo found another turtle yesterday. We also walked the lake bridge.

Taking my pickup to Billingsley Ford to patch the oil leak and check for problems with the pickup. Hoping to have it back tomorrow so we can resume our lake trips.

Thanks for the ping. As a contractor, supported NAVSEA for 30 years. There’s a small museum on the base which houses a submarine periscope and other hands on stuff. No visit is complete without hitting the dive klaxon.

I don’t know...I wish there were some kind of folk remedy or vitamin that could prevent this.

She gets home, is doing great, then, all-of-a-sudden, her mental status deteriorates and she ends up in the hospital with a UTI. Can’t figure it out. She just saw a visiting nurse yesterday and there were no signs of it.

Gooooood mornin', Early Birds!
Are the leaves falling where you are?
They are still green here!
We've been no where near the 30s it takes!
I expect, unless we get an ice storm
...that they'll turn in November.
I hope none of you are in SC where the flooding is awful!
Prayers for those impacted by this devastation!
Y'all have a Terrific Tuesday!
((((hugs))))

Aha, so your desk has the “Ben Franklin” Filing System.

Doing okay, Kathy. Daylight is less and less as we move closer to November, I’ve not seen any snow in the air.
We did have a lot of rain- no flooding here that I am aware off.

Great grands are doing well, Precious is walking! Oh boy, look out now. She has a birthday coming up - will be 1 year old.
Time just flies.
