~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Washington Navy Yard, Washington D. C.

The Washington Navy Yard (WNY) is the former shipyard and ordnance plant of the United States Navy in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is the oldest shore establishment of the U.S. Navy.

The Yard currently serves as a ceremonial and administrative center for the U.S. Navy, home to the Chief of Naval Operations, and is headquarters for the Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Historical Center, the Department of Naval History, the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps, Naval Reactors, Marine Corps Institute, the United States Navy Band, and other more classified facilities.

The Washington Navy Yard was the scene of many scientific developments. Robert Fulton conducted research and testing on his clockwork torpedo during the War of 1812. In 1822, Commodore John Rodgers built the country's first marine railway for the overhaul of large vessels.

John A. Dahlgren developed his distinctive bottle-shaped cannon that became the mainstay of naval ordnance before the Civil War. In 1898, David W. Taylor developed a ship model testing basin, which was used by the Navy and private shipbuilders to test the effect of water on new hull designs.

The first shipboard aircraft catapult was tested in the Anacostia River in 1912, and a wind tunnel was completed at the Yard in 1916. The giant gears for the Panama Canal locks were cast at the Yard. Navy Yard technicians applied their efforts to medical designs for prosthetic hands and molds for artificial eyes and teeth.

Good evening, Robert.

I have some history with the Washington Navy Yard. In the late 50's my Father, then a Lt., brought me there for a tour of a Fletcher Class Destroyer or DE - can't remember which.

In the late 60's, my Father, then a Cdr., went to diving School there. A 38-year old Cdr., he embarrassed the young sailors he trained with. The Chief who was running the P/T constantly used his performance to goad the the younger ones to better performance. My Dad qualified at 280 under air, 320 under oxy-helium.

In the early 70's, after the war, I was stationed at NNMC Bethesda - relegated to the Supply Dept. I ran the Small Store and made a run every Wednesday down to the Navy Yard to pick up uniform items and blank forms.

More recently, I have had the occasion to pass in front of the gate where once I entered for my weekly runs, bringing me son to Friday Parades at 8th and I.

I did...it was a good day.

But...Mom’s in the hospital again. I think it’s another UTI.

We had some nice rain over the weekend but it’s probably going to be warmer and sunny tomorrow. Our rain was not devastating like that on the East Coast, though! How were things were you live and work?

Howdy, Kathy! (((hugs)))

No umbrella. it never did rain that hard, but it sure was nice. My internet seems to be much better since Friday night. I guess it was something with my cable company. All my devices were having issues.

I hope you get yours sorted out soon. It’s very frustrating! I nearly gave up on tunes on Friday night. LOL!

Just hope things stay good for my thread tomorrow night! :)
