The Republican establishment designed the process to deliver the 2016 presidential nomination to a business-friendly moderate who avoids so-called social issues. The consultants who rewrote the party rules after 2012 are now trying to explain to their patrons what went wrong and how to fix it.
Plan A, of course, was to assure the nomination of Jeb Bush, whose views are the perfect reflection of the Republican donor class.
But despite many months of campaigning, $114 million of political funds raised through June 30, and two presidential debates watched by a record-setting average of 24 million people, Jeb Bush has dropped to sixth place, registering only 4% in the latest Pew poll.
One reason for Jeb's poor performance is that he never learned from Ronald Reagan's example of how to prepare for a presidential campaign after his narrow defeat at the 1976 convention in Kansas City. Reagan then traveled the country speaking to small audiences of grass rooters and fielding their questions.
The immigration issue, and the way it has grabbed the attention of the grass roots, made it difficult for Bush to secure the Republican Party nomination in the usual way. Bush will continue to try, of course, and may be able to play insider politics to line up more endorsements and donors with wads of political money.
But the kingmakers always have a Plan B if their first choice stumbles. In 1964, for example, Pennsylvania Gov. William Scranton was carefully groomed as a second-choice alternative who could jump in the race after Nelson Rockefeller failed to stop the conservative Barry Goldwater.

When all is said and done and you can’t prevail, you subvert.
That’s V.P. pick Bush in a nutshell.
They convinced Reagan he needed to “balance” the ticket. You can’t go running into an election on what you promised! You need to offer up something to the folks who think 160 degrees opposite of what you do.
When Trump gets the nomination, they’ll pull the same thing on him. Instead of Cruz, they’ll offer up Bush, Rubio, or Fiorina. Here Donald, you must do this if you really want to win. Of course that’s B.S.
Only in an instance like McCain do you need to do that. If a candidate disagrees with almost all of what the base thinks, you have to toss them a bone like Palin. McCain was squeezed in over massive objections. Palin was the only chance they had.
With Trump, he is appealing to Conservatives, Indpendents, Democrats, Women, Blacks, Hispanics...
He does not need to moderate, or balance his ticket.
Don’t do it Trump.
Look to Reagan/Bush to see why.
Tell the “Balanced ticket” boys to F off.
Name Cruz and tell them to stick it.
Phyllis Schlafly?
My God, she was an old bat when I was a kid.
+1000 up votes!
Great post. You said it all, in a few sentences.
Plan B was Walker, but he’s out already.
Plan C is Rubio
Plan D is FioRINO
Plan E is Kasich
Plan F is Christie
Plan G is Carson
Plan H is Huckabee
Plan I is Pataki
Plan J is Graham
Plan K is Paul
Plan L is Gilmore
The RNC has to produce an amnesty candidate for The Cheap Labor Express.

Personally, I think they are well on their way to plan Q because even P is now failing with the newly found morsel that Fiorina’s charity gave 500K to Planned Parenthood since 2011.
What I think most missed is that any one of the establishment pukes is OK with them, but the real desperation to take out Trump lies in what he will have for coat tails in the down ballots. As he retains his lead, others will see this and use a model that Dave Brat used to oust Eric Cantor. They to will ride the wave and file as primary contenders to the long standing establishment GOPe Reps and Senators.
Long ball here folks. There are also 34 Senate and 435 House seats on the same ballot across the country. Just winning 25% of the establishment seats to Trump minded insurgents totally changes the entire landscape, not to mention the mandate.
If bernie the red somehow prevails over cankles in the primary, then it will really throw a wrench into their Plan C.
Have popcorn on hand.
And what does her age have to do with the insight she offers? Do you have any disagreement with the substance? Did you even bother to go to the link and read the concluding two paragraphs, which have the core message?
I saw her speak about 10 years ago. It was in front of a moderately hostile college crowd with plenty of feminzais in training. She was, yes, old, but also sharp as a tack and handled their mean-spirited questions with wit aplomb.
Based on this commentary, she is still just as sharp.
So, did you have anything of substance to offer? As your snarky comments about her age certainly don’t fall into the “of substance” category.
Well, nobody said it was a GOOD plan! That's why it was Plan B!
Nothing. I'm surprised she's still alive.
Do you have any disagreement with the substance?
No.

I listened to her daily on the radio in the early 70s.
Based on this commentary, she is still just as sharp.
OK.

My turn to ask a question: What are you...an old bat?
Headed there, but no.
I just demand better of FReepers than what you seemed to be offering, that’s all.
I had no idea you were the moderator/owner.
“When Trump gets the nomination, theyll pull the same thing on him. Instead of Cruz, theyll offer up Bush, Rubio, or Fiorina.”
Actually, no. Trump’s only weakness, at this point, is nailing down the conservative base. He’s otherwise connecting with American better than anyone since Reagan. But getting the base to turn out is, of course, CRITICAL to a Republican victory. So it will be CRUZ for VP.
I hope so. I like that reasoning, but I honestly think the GOPe will try to sell him on the idea of him pulling in Conservatives, and him needing someone on the ticket to pull in the ‘moderate’ wing.
Frankly, I’d love to be wrong. Cruz is exactly the right guy IMO.
They have a lot to teach each other, and I know Cruz would help keep him from making mistakes, and Trump could teach him some of his high finance skills.
We could get a brilliant 16 years out of them.
I know what you’re saying, but this is Trump. I doubt he gives the GOPe more than 5 minutes of his time, considering the way they’ve treated him. He knows who is friends are and I’m sure he has his own polling to find out just who his supporters are. I really doubt that, unlike any other GOP candidate, he’ll do ANYTHING that Frank Luntz tells him to do.
You know, I can’t say that you’re wrong. I’d like to think you’re right on target. I still know the GOPe and what their tactics are.
If you can win, you subvert.
Whether Trump buys in or not, who’s to know?
I think he’s smarter than that, but it isn’t an obvious trick. It can make sense. I disagree with it and Bush (Reagan) clearly reveals why, but who knows.
Trump is a smart guy and I may be worrying needlessly. I never count my chickens before they hatch. Until the selection is made, I’ll be concerned.
Thanks for your comments. I agree with your logic.
“Trump, you ignorant bastard, I read your book”
Roflol. Of course he is.
Go back and read his book... Before he started lying to you to get your vote!
