nowadays you gotta wonder if the shooter has something against another person, or if it was gross incompetence aiming too low.

First prayers for the Marine, secondly I don't get your comment, how do you shoot someone in the head by aiming to low? I've never seen a firing line where one person is firing behind the other or where the target is up in the air.

We did a live fire move and cover n army basic in 81.

Depends on whether it was a qualification range, or a fire-and-maneuver live-fire range.

My infantry companies did live-fire (fire and maneuver) many times

He was probably thinking of one of those live fire exercises where you low crawl under barbed wire while they shoot over your head.

They were on the ground going under obstacles, and they were supposed to be firing live ammo well above them.
