Review: Hillary Clinton on ‘Saturday Night Live’
New York Times ^ | 10/4/2015 | James Poniewozik

Hillary Rodham Clinton appears to have figured out how best to neutralize, at least for a night, a potential public image problem. Just pour her a stiff drink.

On the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live,” Mrs. Clinton played “Val,”a kindly bartender opposite Kate McKinnon, the cast member who portrays her. It was a nice encounter — surprisingly nice, given Ms. McKinnon’s work to date.

Ms. Mckinnon's impression has been the toughest “S.N.L.” has done of Mrs. Clinton in her long political career. In 2008, Amy Poehler played her sharply but admiringly admiringly, as a well-prepared aspirant whose fault was mainly being too eager. Arguably, Ms. Poehler’s Clinton was even a rough model for her later role as the idealistic if overzealous bureaucrat, Leslie Knope, on “Parks and Recreation.”

Ms. McKinnon has taken some of the same attributes of Mrs. Clinton and sharpened them into a flint dagger. She’s played the candidate as unhinged by ambition, struggling to ask for votes rather than simply demand them. Where Ms. Poehler gave Mrs. Clinton a fulsome belly laugh, Ms. McKinnon’s is a brusque, “Hah hah HAH!” (“What a relatable laugh!” she once congratulated herself.) But the key to Ms. McKinnon’s character is in her face: the eyes flaring into burning headlamps of desire, her teeth bared in an Ed Grimley rictus.

Those teeth were still there in their joint sketch, but the satire was comparatively toothless.

In-kind contribution.

Where’s the FEC?

Is that an intentional reprise of Frank Fontaine's "Crazy Guggenheim" character from The Jackie Gleason Show?

SNL is still on TV?

I tuned them out in the mid 80s.

Why the choice of Val as the bartender’s name? Homage to Jarrett? Or should it have been Vaal?

So the Times will “review” a 5 minute Saturday Night Live comedy skit...but they still won’t review Mark Levin’s latest smash bestseller?

She could host SNL another 200 times but the public perception won’t change. Hillary=LIAR. She maxes out at 43% of the vote and unless there is a serious third party challenge, she can’t win.

“unless there is a serious third party challenge”

And, yet, some in the GOPe are asking Mittens to run 3rd party. I wonder what that would do for Hillery’s chances.

Did viewership go up or down for the show?

I stopped watching around 1978 or 79. Worthless leftist propaganda which overshadows any of the few funny skits back then.

Sounds like an in-kind contribution to the hildebitch.

According to the National Enquirer she is ill. If and when she gets indicted she will claim to have every illness under the sun in order to stay out of prison. People will remember her appearance on SNL and she did not look sick. This is going to backfire on her. She still thinks that she can win but as soon as Joe Biden enters the race and saves the democratic party she’s toast.

I have two friends who watched but they didn’t tune in for 100% of it. Monica was up and down and Bill was in and out.

I think she does a wonderful job of portraying a potted plant.

It’s like she was born for the role.

NBC gave Monica´s Boyfriend´s Wife millions worth of free advertising. Every Republican candidate should be thrilled to hear they´ll also be getting a turn on SNL doing a long skit that amounts to a campaign ad for them. Oh, wait...

I watched the show and FReepers who dismiss it don’t need to watch it, but know that most young people DO. And a lot more people watch it than read FR. We forget that young people aren’t taught civics or the constitution. They don’t know what the senate is (the news segment on snl had a “typical young guy” and his comments were pretty accurate).

To counteract the influence of SNL we need to know what it is.

My FReeper perspective review of the Hillary skit: she did herself a huge favor with the low info’s. She was attractive, for her. She was funny. She took some heavy ribbing both on policy and personality. She looked more “presidential” on SNL, in a skit, than she does anywhere else.

I laughed. I did some open mouth shock at what went on. I thought it was pretty funny, and a bit faux scandalous that they ribbed her for not being lib enough, and that they had Huma accompany her to the bar. Bill puts in a drunken appearance and runs when he sees the horror of two “Hillarys.”

The Killam Trump impression was ghastly. Especially when they had that other guy do a genius trump for more than a decade. And that guy was there. He played Bill Clinton. Killam mugged really stupid Trump faces, and when he pursed his lips out, he always showed his teeth. Trump doesn’t. It looked really bad. He played him as a sexist idiot. Trump is loud and blunt but he ain’t stupid. Trump as a candidate is funny and they could have done so much better.

SNL is indeed free political advertising. Most important part: the American people LOVE people who can laugh at themselves. Trump would do well to appear. And he will.
