My parents chose an ethnic name for me. One that goes back to Sanskrit. Yeah, it got me beaten-up once or twice . . . but then I got wise. It was the South Side of Chicago after all. No one messed with me again . . . .

My Federal Railroad Administration project sponsor has a given name of "Swamidas". He goes by "John" in his daily professional life. He still uses his given name on his driver's license. Many of the mechanical engineers at my subcontractor are Indian. Most retain their given names. It's entertaining to have some variety.
