VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Sunday reaffirmed Catholic opposition to gay marriage as he opened a three-week gathering of bishops from around the world but said the Church had to show love and understanding towards all.

Francis presided at a solemn Mass in St. Peter's Basilica to open the meeting, known as a synod, on the theme of the family in the modern world.

Francis presided at a solemn Mass

No he didn't unless he used the ancient rite and was served by a deacon and sub-deacon.

The truth, Pope Francis said, is not changed by passing fads or popular opinions. “The truth which protects individuals and humanity as a whole from the temptation of self-centredness and from turning fruitful love into sterile selfishness, faithful union into temporary bonds.”

Quoting his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, the Holy Father said “Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality. Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in an arbitrary way. In a culture without truth, this is the fatal risk facing love.”

”… but said the Church had to show love and understanding towards all."

With all due respect to the Pope, I have to question if Jesuits really take the time to study the Holy Bible. If he has then for some reason he doesn’t seem to understand Jesus' teaching of Matthew 18:15-17, particularly verse 17 concerning Christians not associating with unrepentant sinners, nor Paul’s inspired statement of 1 Corinthians 5:11, nor Jesus’ condemnation of the Pharisees and teachers of the law in Matthew 23.

All of these passages indicate that Christians are to draw a line with respect to not associating unrepentant sinners, a line which the worldly Pope evidently doesn’t understand.

I don’t think the ancient Jews tolerated this “abomination” either.

Nor did I ever encounter any open homosexuals during the year I spent in Orthodox and Conservative synagogues. If I had, I would have been out of there fast.

NO still means NO as far as I’m concerned.

Orthodox Jews still consider homosexuality unacceptable. I know there’s a thing called Modern Orthodox, but they don’t accept homosexuality, either.

The final document from the synod should be interesting. This pope says one thing, but then does another and it’s been reported that the fix is in for the synod.

"15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

"17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Pope opens bank, but still opposes embezzlement.

Pope open restaurant, but still opposes cannibalism.

Pope opens power plant, but still opposes burning Jews.

He’s SO inconsistent!

“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

The flesh is weak and can still get us repentant sinners into trouble, especially when we associate with the wrong people. But Jesus is greater than the flesh.

“The flesh is weak and can still get us repentant sinners into trouble, especially when we associate with the wrong people. But Jesus is greater than the flesh.”

He lives inside believers and He has given them a mission to reach the lost.

“there is more rejoicing in the presence of the angels when one sinner repents...”

Your alternative is to huddle up and be disobedient to His commands. Yes, you must be wise. Yes, you must be a witness.

"Yes, you must be a witness."

And when the people that you witness to reject the good news of Jesus then you don’t keep on trying to convert them by being nice. Luke 9:5 indicates that if people don’t welcome you then you shake the dust off your feet when you leave the town.
