Marty Beil, Wisconsin Union Leader Who Lost Fight With Walker, Dies at 68
NY Times ^ | 10-3-15

Marty Beil, who as the longtime leader of the union that represented Wisconsin’s state employees was at the center of the fight in 2011 against Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal that effectively ended collective bargaining for most public workers, died on Thursday at his home in Mazomanie, Wis. He was 68.

The cause has not been determined, his sister, Mickey Beil, said.

To many, Mr. Beil was the face of the state employees union, an outspoken advocate of workers’ rights for more than 40 years.

In the 2011 fight with Mr. Walker that he ultimately lost, Mr. Beil helped organize protests at the State Capitol that drew as many as 100,000 people.

“Marty was never afraid to stand up for workers when the deck was stacked against them,” Senator Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat, said.

His most bitter political rivals, however, were silent. Messages seeking comment from Mr. Walker and Republican legislative leaders were not immediately returned.

Mr. Beil started working as a probation and parole officer for the state in 1969. He became active with the union and was chosen as president of his local chapter in 1973. He was elected president of the union in 1978 and held the position until 1985, when he was selected as the union’s executive director.

Mr. Beil retired in June, saying he felt it was time to step aside for a younger generation of leaders after his union merged with two others earlier in the year.

Thank you for the heads up, Diana in Wisconsin. It doesn’t feel right to rejoice in someone’s death, but to Wisconsin conservatives, the passingof this iperson ranks right up there with the overthrow of Ceaucescu.

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin inteest ping list.

Walker's fault! Oh. Wait. Too soon?

“It is unconscionable, and it is something I will hold against Scott Walker until the day I die, the pain he’s caused to state workers in such a careless fashion,” Beil said in a June interview with the State Journal.

The pain was just too much for him.

Does he look like a union thug or what?

Unions formed to protect workers from dick employers had their place and were very much needed .... long ago.

Now they just take fill their own coffers and fight for silly things like a "break" every few hours.

I totally agree. That kind of constant hatred and rancor does terrible things to the body. Before I retired from a major corporation, two union leaders, who made life miserable for all, passed away, too young. You get addicted to conflict and it kills you.

Chrysler UAW workers recently turned down a contract offer that included the following...

$3,000 signing bonus
Increase in number of paid holidays
Keeping healthcare premiums at ZERO
Significant wage increase for the lower of the 2 tier pay system
3% wage increase twice over the next 4 years for upper tier workers

Union workers is soooo abused.

“Fat, Bitter and Socialist is no way to go through life, Son!”

I’m sure someone loved him somewhere along the way. No cause of death, though.

Walkercide? ;)

Greed.

The old timers want more of a raise, claiming they haven’t had one in 10 years. (Average $28/hr now)

How many people in Obamas America have gotten raises recently?
