ROCKUMENTARY: OCTOBER 3, 1959

#7: Paul Anka: “Put Your Head on My Shoulder”

His career has spanned five decades, and he has partnered with such entertainers as Michael Jackson.

Paul Anka (b. 1941) was Canadian and a church choir singer. He recorded his first single when he was 14. In 1957 he went to New York where he auditioned for Don Costa – the man who was later to bring Anthony & the Imperials back with a new sound – singing a song he had written to a a girl at his church whom he never knew. “Diana” brought Anka stardom as it made #1 on the charts. He toured Britain with Buddy Holly, for whom he wrote “It Doesn't Matter Anymore.”

Over the years he wrote the theme for “The Tonight Show,” “She's a Lady” for Tom Jones, and the English lyrics to “My Way” for Frank Sinatra. He wrote the theme for the film “The Longest Day” which became the official march of the Canadian Airborne Regiment.

He made an amazing comeback in the Seventies.

ROCKUMENTARY: OCTOBER 3, 1959

#50: Della Reese: “Don’t You Know”

This tune is from an opera, “La Boheme,” where it is sung by Musetta as she turns her former lover green with jealousy when he sees her with her current sugar daddy. Here is the original.

Puccini: “La Boheme,” Musetta’s Waltz

She was born in 1931 as Delloreese Early, and she has had an amazing career: singer, actress, game show panelist, talk show hostess and ordained minister. Her best known acting gig was the lead role in “Touched by an Angel.”
